UNLV Lady Rebels Going Strong This Season
Stephen Lew-Imagn Images

The Lady Rebels are 7-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play. They are on a two-game winning streak and will look for another win on Dec. 31 against Fresno State.

The Lady Rebels have six players averaging more than five points per game and two players averaging more than 1.5 steals per game. Leading the charge are guard Jasmyn Lott, who averages 13.8 points per game, and forward Meadow Roland, who averages 13.6 points per game.

Their scoring might be impressive, but it is their defense that steals the show every night. Roland anchors that effort, averaging 1.8 blocks, 1.3 steals and 6.8 defensive rebounds per game. She isn’t the only force on the defensive end. Forward Shelbee Brown leads the team in defensive rebounds with 6.9 per game and steals with 2.7 per game. A forward putting up those numbers is rare in today’s game, with many players focusing more on offense than defense.

This team, led by head coach Lindy La Rocque, shows that with the right pieces on both ends you can make a major impact on the game. UNLV is holding opponents to an average of 64.5 points per game on 40.2 percent shooting, compared to the Lady Rebels’ 65.8 points per game on 40.3 percent. Their most impressive stat is that they allow only 7.3 free throws per game. That’s far fewer than the average NCAA women’s basketball team, which attempts between 10 and 30 per game. That stat shows how disciplined their defense really is.

Fans are buckled in and enjoying a promising season, hoping for a strong postseason run.
