West Indies white-ball skipper Shai Hope got caught in the middle of a bizarre incident, while playing for Guyana Amazon Warriors, against Trinbago Knight Riders in a 2025 Caribbean Premier League encounter. Hope was dismissed in a strange hit-wicket off what should have been a wide delivery.
The cricketing world was not ready to witness something as bizarre as Shai Hope’s dismissal, during the 17th match of the ongoing CPL season. The 31-year-old wicket-keeper lost his all-important wicket in a peculiar way, much to the surprise of not just the fans and commentators, but also the players on the ground. Hope’s dismissal came as he was trying to accelerate the Guyana Amazon Warriors’ innings.
Off the 15th over of the first innings bowled by Terrance Hinds, Hope sought for an opportunity to speed up the scoring rate. The very first delivery of the over was short, slow and way outside the off-stump, beyond his hitting arc.
However, instead of letting it go for a wide ball, Shai Hope attempted play an unorthodox reverse scoop, but missed it. To add to his woes, in the follow-through of his swing, Hope’s bat disastrously crashed into the stumps, leading to his dismissal.
Unbelievable scenes!

His shot-selection error resulted in him losing his wicket at a crucial juncture, with Guyana Amazon Warriors reeling at 108/7. The manner in which his bat hit the stumps even left TKR captain and wicket-keeper Nicholas Pooran surprised before he began celebrating with his teammates. Shai Hope departed for 39 runs off 29 balls, having hit three fours and a six throughout his innings.
Hope however, did finish as his side’s top-scorer, as Guyana finally managed to post a decent first innings total of 163 runs, thanks to late contributions from Dwaine Pretorius and Quentin Sampson. However, 164-target was not enough, as TKR raced to the finish line in just 17.2 overs, with six wickets in hand. Alex Hales (74 off 43) and Colin Munro (52 off 30) stitched together a 116-run opening partnership.
For the bowlers, Imran Tahir was impressive for Guyana, taking a four-wicket haul. For TKR, Akeal Hosein finished with figures of 3/27, and Terrance Hinds took two wickets. The win propelled TKR to the top of the 2025 CPL table, while Guyana Amazon Warriors remain in fourth place after four matches.
Nicholas Pooran-led Trinbago Knight Riders are firmly in control in the ongoing 2025 Caribbean Premier League season, as they sit on top of the standings with ten points. The four-time CPL winners, who finished fourth during the 2024 season, are currently on a four-match winning streak.
The team has won five out of six matches so far, with their only defeat coming in a match against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons. TKR recently secured two consecutive victories on back-to-back matchdays, against Barbados Royals and Guyana Amazon Warriors. Against the Royals, TKR chased down a 179-run target with ease in just 17.5 overs, with Colin Munro hitting a match-winning 44 ball-67 run innings.
Against the Royals, captain Pooran also contributed with a 65-run knock off 40 balls, to see his team over the line. Meanwhile, against 2021 CPL winners Guyana, TKR once again proved themselves in a chase, this time racing to a 164-run target in just 17.2 overs. Of their five victories this season, TKR have successfully chased down the target in three games and defended their total in the other two.
Colin Munro leads the run-scoring charts with 335 runs in six games, having scored at an average of 55.83, hitting two fifties and a hundred. In bowling, ex-Pakistani pacer Mohammad Amir leads with nine wickets in six matches, while Akeal Hosein and Andre Russell have eight wickets each.
