It should be an entertaining third day at the US Open with 20 matches on the slate at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for all 20 matches, including Lorenzo Musetti vs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Alexander Zverev vs Alejandro Tabilo, Tommy Paul vs Elmer Moller, and Jannik Sinner vs Vit Kopriva. But who will reach the round of 64?

US Open Day 3 Predictions

Gael Monfils vs Roman Safiullin

Zain: Another exciting first-round clash, with Gael Monfils still showcasing his otherworldly athleticism and Roman Safiullin’s big hitting providing a contrasting style the fans should enjoy. Safiullin has not been in his best form this season, while Monfils has produced exceptional moments and matches at Major-level in 2025. He may very well add another one here.

Prediction: Monfils in 4

Tope: Gael Monfils may be showing the effects of age, but he consistently elevates his performance during Grand Slam events and will aim to deliver an entertaining match for the American audience and will look to wrap this up quickly against a struggling Safiullin

Prediction: Monfils in 4

Damian: Monfils is coming into the US Open undercooked and it’s tough to say if he’s in good shape fitness-wise. Safiullin on the other hand is just going from week to week with a decent performance here or there, but nobody looks at him as a major threat right now. Should result in a pretty close match, I’ll just trust the fitter player.

Jacob Fearnley vs Roberto Bautista Agut

Zain: Jacob Fearnley started the season well, but both his form and fitness have tailed off recently, with match wins becoming increasingly difficult to come by. While Roberto Bautista Agut may be closer to the end of his career than the beginning, he still has enough baseline reliability to get the win here.

Prediction: Bautista Agut in 3

Tope: Roberto Bautista Agut’s performances over the last two months has improved compared to his earlier play this year. Nevertheless, his results on hard courts this season have been disappointing by his usual standards, with eight losses out of twelve matches. Playing Jacob Fearnley, who is currently enduring his most challenging stretch of the season is a good spot for the veteran Spaniard.

Prediction: Agut in 4

Damian: Not sure what has happened to Fearnley’s form recently, perhaps there are some underlying physical issues that we’re not fully aware of. It makes you think that a veteran as solid as Bautista Agut could be enough to stop him right now, even if the game is slowly getting a bit too physical for the Spaniard.

Prediction: Bautista Agut in 4

Marton Fucsovics vs Denis Shapovalov

Zain: Another clash of contrasting styles sees Marton Fucsovics the counterpuncher against Denis Shapovalov the shot-maker. Fucsovics comes into this match with confidence after winning Winston-Salem, though fatigue could be a factor. Shapovalov, meanwhile, has struggled for form recently offering little optimism. A five-set battle seems likely, with the more confident player edging it out.

Prediction: Fucsovics in 5

Tope: Fucsovics is riding a wave of confidence after recently clinching the title in Winston Salem. Conversely, Shapovalov has struggled with consistency this season and is entering this matchup after suffering two consecutive losses. Nevertheless, this clash won’t be easy for the Hungarian, as their encounters have always been fiercely competitive but Fucsovics has momentum on his side, especially on hardcourts

Prediction: Fucsovics in 4

Damian: Fucsovics won the title in Winston-Salem and while that grants you plenty of confidence, it also required the same amount of mental and physical energy. Might actually be a helping hand for Shapovalov, who hasn’t done well at the Slams this year and could use at least taking advantage of his seeding and likely competing against Sinner in the third round.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Alexandre Muller

Zain: Having fallen from the high standards he once set, Stefanos Tsitsipas arrives in New York still armed with his heavy forehand but far less consistency elsewhere. Alexandre Muller should be confident here, viewing this as an opportunity to claim a big-name scalp. Even at his peak, Tsitsipas often struggled in New York, and that trend may continue.

Prediction: Muller in 4

Tope: Stefanos Tsitsipas is facing the most challenging period of his career, struggling with fitness and changing coaches. The former world #3 has now dropped outside the top #20 and looks very beatable. The tenacious Alexander Muller isn’t the player he’d hope to face in his current vulnerable state and he must remain extremely focused if he wants to remain in New York. That being said, The 28-year-old Frenchman is capable of winning this outright.

Prediction: Muller in 5

Damian: For the time being there are almost no certainties regarding Tsitsipas, who needs to sort out his mental chaos before looking to return to the top of the sport. Muller can be a tough out with a relentless attitude and solid ground game. The Greek has never done that well in New York, who’s to say he’ll start producing right now?

Prediction: Muller in 5
