As the HSBC SVNS Series heads to Hong Kong and Singapore, both USA Men’s and Women’s Sevens teams are looking to make a statement. The Hong Kong Sevens will be held at the new Kai Tak Sports Park from March 28 to 30 and will be followed by the Singapore leg.
For the Men’s Eagles Sevens, this tournament represents a fresh start. Following a ninth-place finish in Vancouver, Head Coach Simon Amor remains cautiously optimistic about his squad’s progress, stating on the USA Rugby website, “The good with our group is that we’re battling in these games, challenging the decision-making and execution, and it continues to improve.”
Additionally, Uluamu Niutupuivaha is anticipated to make his debut, adding significant size and impact to the squad. Coach Amor expressed confidence in Ulu’s potential, saying, “Ulu has the potential to be a fantastic sevens player… his desire to improve is tremendous.”
Under the leadership of veteran Stephen Tomasin, the men face a challenging group that includes Fiji, Ireland, and Argentina, with each match vital for building momentum.
Conversely, the Women’s Eagles are eager to bounce back after finishing eighth in Vancouver. Coach Emilie Bydwell acknowledged the previous disappointment but remains focused on future progress.
“Since returning to training, the team has been focused and committed to elevating and ensuring we play the way we want to and meet the standards required to do so,” she remarked. With the return of Olympic athlete Sammy Sullivan and the dynamic presence of Nia Toliver, the squad is poised for a more competitive and spirited performance.
Both teams are striving to maximize their opportunities at these exciting back-to-back events before heading to Los Angeles for the SVNS World Championship in May.
