Riley Patterson has dominated for the Barrie Colts in the last two years, and now the former fourth-round pick of the Canucks is requesting a trade.
Back in the 2024 NHL Draft, the Vancouver Canucks used a fourth-round pick on Riley Patterson, a forward out of Burlington Ontario, a move that was seen as very low risk given the position with his relative size and skill.
At 19-years of age, he's shown plenty of talent through two full seasons in the Ontario Hockey League, putting up 62 and 59 points over his two campaigns with the Barrie Colts.
However, things have now changed as Colts GM Marty Williamson has confirmed that Patterson will not attend training camp after requesting a trade, with the GM also noting that there's no hard feelings.
'He wants a fresh start. No hard feelings, I still really like Riley.'
Standing at 6-foot-0 and weighing 194 pounds, Patterson has the size and the skill to make it at the next level, and while he's one of Vancouver's most underrated prospects, there's hope that he can be a diamond in the rough and become the next late-round pick to thrive in Vancouver.
Only time will tell whether this move effects his reputation in the OHL or if a a move ends up being the best thing for his career, but right now all signs point to Patterson being moved ahead of the regular season, and if he finds himself in the right spot, there's a good chance he can go off for a career year in what may be his final season in the Ontario Hockey League.
