Vince McMahon's Failed Plan To Lure Conor McGregor To WWE Revealed
enzo amore surprised nxt wwe

When Conor McGregor was at the height of his fame, there were constant rumblings that the Irish MMA star might show up in WWE. It turns out one of the ways Vince McMahon tried to get McGregor to step inside the square circle was by annoying him. At least that's what Enzo Amore has claimed, revealing he was ordered by McMahon to keep prodding the fighter until he turned up at WWE's door.

Enzo Amore Was Ordered To Annoy Conor McGregor Into Working With WWE

Amore told all about what he was asked to do by McMahon during an appearance on Julian Dorey's podcast. Aside from tweeting at McGregor until he got a response, the former Cruiserweight Champion claims McMahon sent him to McGregor's blockbuster boxing match against Floyd Mayweather, meaning this pursuit of The Notorious One began in the summer of 2017.

I went to the Conor McGregor, Floyd Mayweather fight because Vince McMahon sent me there... Vince McMahon made me tweet, pulled me into a room. Big Cass is my witness, thank God he was a witness because people probably even wouldn’t f**king believe me.

Sending Amore to the fight clearly didn't go to plan, as not only did the former WWE Superstar end up getting noticed by McGregor, but until now, I didn't even know he was there. That didn't stop McMahon from trying to execute his grand plan, though. The ex-WWE chairman ordered Amore to keep tweeting at McGregor, tasking him with getting McGregor interested in WWE by WrestleMania season.

The Plan Was For Conor McGregor And Enzo Amore To Clash At WrestleMania

McMahon told Amore that he wanted the then-Cruiserweight Champion to pick a fight with McGregor, the end goal being a match between them at WrestleMania, presumably WrestleMania 34 in 2018 based on the timeline. Amore was a heel at the time, and the plan was for him to have a big mouth that got him into situations he would somehow escape from unscathed, a match at WrestleMania against McGregor being the ultimate example of that.

You might think Amore wouldn't have been a big enough star for a McGregor match, but the issue with having the UFC star wrestle someone in WWE would have been the size difference. As tough as McGregor is, he only weighs 150 lbs, so 100 lbs less than most WWE Superstars, and roughly half the size of Brock Lesnar. I'm sure he would give most of them a run for their money, but it would have been hard to sell from a pro wrestling point of view.

It seems the desire to get McGregor in WWE continued even after Amore had been released. The last time it seemed likely was in 2021 and through 2022 when Triple H admitted to wanting him in WWE. McGregor noted after WrestleMania 38 that he wasn't at the event because WWE Superstars are afraid of him, which, unsurprisingly, generated a lot of comebacks from some of those wrestlers.
