The Golden State Warriors still have not found common ground with Jonathan Kuminga on a new contract.

The forward recently turned down a two-year, $45 million deal and seems to be leaning toward accepting the $7.9 million qualifying offer for next season instead.

According to reports, the Warriors may end up giving in during negotiations because they are reluctant to let Kuminga walk without getting anything in return.

Phoenix and Sacramento have both shown interest and made offers, but so far, none have been enough to persuade Golden State to make a move.

Golden State’s interest in Pelicans’ Trey Murphy III

NBA insider Jake Fischer has identified who Golden State will target if they are able to keep Kuminga.

The Warriors are reportedly keen on New Orleans small forward Trey Murphy III, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Fischer revealed that the Warriors have already made contact with the Pelicans to check on Murphy’s availability, although New Orleans is expected to be reluctant to part ways with him.

“Sources say that the Warriors have a strong affinity for Murphy and have made outreach to New Orleans as recently as this summer,” Fischer wrote.

“Yet sources say that the Pelicans, to be clear, have batted away calls for the 25-year-old, valuing him highly. The two-way forward will be playing on a contract in 2025-26, at precisely $25 million, as desirable talent.”

Murphy’s shooting would fit nicely into Warriors’ line-up

Murphy has steadily improved since joining the NBA in 2021. Last season, he averaged 21.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.

The 25-year-old forward proved himself a consistent shooter. In the 2024/25 season, he shot 36.1% on 8.3 three-point attempts per game.

This blend of volume and efficiency would fit right into what Golden State likes to do offensively.

But before anything else can happen, the Warriors need to sort out Kuminga’s contract situation first.

Once that is settled, they will be able to move forward with other signings and potentially make a real push for Murphy in New Orleans.
