The first week of college football produced several jaw-dropping catches. On Sunday, Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium witnessed another one during Carson Beck’s debut game for the Miami Hurricanes.

Week one fixtures are always special. And if the first game is against a direct rival, then it sets the tone for a nail-biting affair.

The Hurricanes welcomed fifth-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, a team that played in the CFP final last season. Both teams fielded new quarterbacks. CJ Carr took over from the graduated Riley Leonard (now with the Indianapolis Colts), while Miami entrusted the steering wheel to Georgia transfer Carson Beck.

Beck and Carr traded touchdowns in the first 29 minutes before something magical happened. With barely 30 seconds left until the halftime whistle, the Canes hustled their way inside the Irish’s 25-yard line.

After snapping the ball on second and three, Beck managed to launch a pass in the red zone, right before getting clobbered by a charging Notre Dame defensive lineman. The stadium erupted after a receiver caught the pass.

It wasn’t a regular catch by any means. It was clear that the pressure from the Notre Dame defense forced Beck to overthrow the pass, which nearly went straight to an opposition cornerback.

However, CJ Daniels stood between the ball and the DB. Daniels made the best use of his 6-foot-2 frame to pull off a mesmerizing one-handed catch. Ex-Miami and NFL HOF Michael Irvin jumped in pure ecstasy after witnessing Daniels’ acrobatic effort.

The catch also gave the Hurricanes and Beck their second touchdown of the night to take a seven-point lead.

Daniels’ name may sound familiar to many, especially to LSU fans. There’s no connection between the receiver and former Tigers QB Jayden Daniels. In fact, Daniels arrived in Death Valley a year after JD switched over to the NFL.

However, LSU wasn’t CJ’s first school. His college career began at the Liberty Flames, where he received passes from current Green Bay Packers QB Malik Willis .

Carson Beck leads Miami to a hard-fought win

The game carried on at a brisk pace. Beck extended Miami’s lead in the third quarter by setting up CharMar Brown for a five-yard score.

Notre Dame pegged back with a touchdown of their own before the Canes’ kicker converted consecutive field goals to keep his team ahead with three minutes until the final whistle. A determined Carr punched in a touchdown from five yards in garbage time, but the Canes restored their lead with an FG.

The game witnessed a confusing end. After Miami failed to move the scoreboard, the Irish were presented with a great opportunity to win the game. However, the Canes’ defense sacked Carr multiple times, which led to the clock hitting zero. Marcus Freeman ’s team lost 27-24 to drop down one place in the AP rankings.

Beck finished with 20 completions from 31 for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Daniels had 5 receptions for 46 yards and one score, while his fellow receiver Malachi Toney caught 6 passes for 82 yards and one score.

After the game, reporters caught up with an emotional Carson Beck for a reaction.

The past eight months has been so hard… I am just so blessed to be out here to have the opportunity to play again.

Carson Beck said

Beck made the tough decision to turn down the NFL and return to play out the final year of his college eligibility. However, instead of going back to Georgia, Beck entered the transfer portal and moved to Miami.

Some argued that he signed with Miami because of a better NIL deal, while others pointed out that he chose the Canes to be with his then girlfriend and Miami basketball star Hanna Cavinder.

However, rumors have it that Cavinder broke up with Beck because she had grown tired of his attitude. His failed romance aside, Beck was brought in to replace Cam Ward (now with the Tennessee Titans), who completed 4313 yards and 43 overall touchdowns in his final year.

Up next, Miami is scheduled to host the Bethune-Cookman football team while the Irish prepare themselves to face SEC powerhouse Texas A&M.
