The No. 6 Iowa State Cyclones toppled the No. 2 Houston Cougars 70-67 in a thrilling matchup on Monday.
The Cyclones took control early on, taking a 10-point lead before the Cougars responded with a quick scoring run.
Both squads were operating smoothly on both ends of the floor, stringing together simultaneous scoring runs. By halftime, Iowa State was ahead by three.
But a few minutes into the second half, Houston put together a 7-0 scoring run to take a small advantage. Once again, Iowa State responded with a run of their own to cut the deficit to one.
In clutch time, the Cyclones went all out with a 13-2 run to retake the lead.
Down by one, the Cougars had the ball with 19 seconds to play. Kingston Flemings lost his footing while driving to the basket and forced his teammate into a tough shot.
The Cougars then knocked down two free throws down the stretch to secure the three-point victory.
It is their ninth consecutive home victory against a top-10 ranked opponent.
