Ivory Coast returns to being among the top four teams of the AFCON, something they hadn’t achieved since the 2015 edition when they ended up lifting the champion’s trophy. It’s the eleventh appearance in a semifinal for the hosts of the current edition.
The journey of the Ivorians in the AFCON has been wild. After almost being eliminated in the group stage, they bid farewell to coach Jean-Louis Gasset amidst national discontent. Under the interim guidance of Emerse Faé, they advanced to the knockout round as one of the best third-placed teams and will now play in the semifinals after defeating Mali 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
RD Congo drew four out of their five matches in the tournament, winning only in the quarterfinals, with a 3-1 victory over Guinea. The Congolese team is in the semifinals of the AFCON for the sixth time and hadn’t reached this stage since the 2015 edition, where they finished third.
