West Virginia has secured a standout transfer in guard Niyol Hauet, who officially announced his commitment on Instagram this week.

The 6‑foot‑4 freshman originally hails from Yokohama, Japan, and spent his high school years in Ogden, Utah, before appearing at Weber State last season.

Hauet put together a strong senior season in 2023-24, averaging 12.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while providing key perimeter defense and outside shooting. His versatile skill set fits squarely into Ross Hodge’s style — a polished combo guard who can handle, shoot, and guard multiple positions.

The international twist to this commitment adds a layer of intrigue. Players born in Japan aren’t common in the Big 12, and Hauet brings a global flavor to Morgantown. His journey from Yokohama to Ogden and now to West Virginia reflects not only his adaptability but also the broadening footprint of college hoops recruitment.

For West Virginia, this pickup addresses both immediate rotation needs and long-term prospects. The Mountaineers often look for experienced, ready-to-contribute transfers, and while Hauet didn’t see the court much at Weber State, he has some serious upside as a big-time playmaker.

Hauet announced over Instagram with a sense of excitement and gratitude, saying he’s eager to compete, learn the system, and help position WVU back near the forefront of the Big 12. That sentiment was echoed across social platforms, where FCS fans and college basketball followers celebrated the move.

This commitment adds a meaningful piece to West Virginia’s offseason puzzle. Hauet’s arrival gives the Mountaineers a skilled ball‑handler with an international pedigree and fresh experience. Now the focus turns to how he fits into rotations and how quickly he can make an impact in one of the nation’s most competitive conferences.
