When LeBron James Defended Caitlin Clark Against Early WNBA Backlash

Caitlin Clark entered the WNBA with a lot of buzz, but some of it also translated into criticism. And it was none other than NBA legend LeBron James whose message helped her fight the adversity and become better.

James spoke about Clark’s entry into the W league during the May 22, 2024, episode of the Mind the Game podcast. This was one week after Clark made her debut with the Indiana Fever. James reminded Clark’s critics how the league had experienced a sudden surge in viewership after the Fever star’s entry.

He also asked Clark to ignore the outside noise, stating, “For her individually, she shouldn’t get involved with anything being said. Just go have fun. I’m rooting for Caitlin.”

James also highlighted that his advice came from firsthand experience of facing similar situations. He said, “I’ve been in that seat before, I’ve walked that road before. I’m just kind of in this mode right now because I’m getting the same thing from watching my son, a 19-year-old, getting all this hate and animosity when he’s just a kid trying to live out his dream.”

Clark was facing a difficult start. She had been the No. 1 overall pick after a historic career at the University of Iowa. While her first game drew over two million viewers, she was also dealing with physical play and heavy criticism from some media members.

But while James defended Clark, he also made sure to show respect to other players like Aliyah Boston. He wasn’t trying to put Clark above the sport, but rather to protect the joy of the game.

The support from James showed that the most famous player in the world recognized the Caitlin Clark effect as a win for everyone.

Caitlin Clark Reveals What LeBron James’ Support Means

Clark later revealed in interviews that James continued to check in on her throughout her first season. She noted that he understood the “microscope” she was under. Having a mentor who had survived the same level of fame made a difference in her transition to the pros.

They discussed basketball, but they also exchanged texts about golf. When she dealt with an injury, James reached out to offer his help and see if she needed anything.

James was not the only legend to speak up. Charles Barkley also defended Clark just a day after the podcast clip was released. Barkley called her critics “petty” and told them they should be thanking her for the attention she brought to the league.

Looking back, the rookie season for Clark validated almost everything James said in that recording. The league saw record ratings, sold-out arenas, and new levels of investment.
