Even though West Virginia was coming off a successful 2023 season, the WVU football staff knew they still had to look to the transfer portal to improve the roster. So now with the end of May fast approaching and summer on the horizon, where do the Mountaineers rank among the rest of the country in terms of their 2024 transfer class?

Taking into account who WVU has brought in so far and who has departed, West Virginia currently sits at No. 16 on On3 Sports’ list. Based on On3’s Transfer Portal Index, the Mountaineers have an index score of 24 and an average position rating of 72.36. This puts West Virginia second in the Big 12, only behind Colorado, the nation’s top transfer class and the program who has experienced the most change roster wise.

WVU has added 11 new players while 21 have departed, granted the rating for those lost (62.34) is significantly below the new additions. Most of the losses have been depth pieces or players who have already graduated.

And just as important as using the portal to find new talent and get better, West Virginia also accomplished its top priority of the offseason by retaining most of the key players with eligibility remaining.

Note: On3’s Team Transfer Portal Index utilizes the On3 (P)erformance score to measure a team’s production during the transfer process, compared relative against its roster and not a comparison against other schools. This proprietary algorithm determines if a school has improved its overall team talent, stayed the same, or declined in talent during the transfer window.

For related stories, the WVU defense is relying on transfer Garnett Hollis to be the next Beanie Bishop and what Justin Robinson will bring to the offense.
