Where Texas is Ranked in ESPN’s Football Power Index

The Texas Longhorns are currently ranked No. 8 in the AP Poll this week, a one-spot drop after a 27-10 win over UTEP, and their position in ESPN’s FPI rankings has changed as well.

Texas is 2-1 on the season after a season-opening loss to now No. 1-ranked Ohio State, and two poor offensive showings in wins over San Jose State and UTEP. After some struggles, Texas has dropped four spots to No. 6 in the football power index.

The Longhorns still have to face four more top-25 teams: No. 11 Oklahoma, No. 20 Vanderbilt, No. 5 Georgia, and No. 10 Texas A&M. Considering the Longhorns’ remaining opponents, ESPN now gives Texas a 2.2% chance to win out.

At this point, ESPN’s FPI doesn’t even give Texas a 100% chance to win six games, although it’s close at 98.4%

Taking a look at Texas’s odds further down the line, it doesn’t look great. The Longhorns currently have a 12.8% chance to win the SEC, a 43.3% chance to make the playoffs, a 9.3% chance to make the national championship, and a 4.6% chance to win it.

Now, these rankings need to be taken lightly. ESPN’s FPI is known for not being the most accurate, particularly because these are analytics based on statistics, so there are plenty of things that go unaccounted for.

Here are the top 10 in ESPN’s FPI:

  1. Oregon
  2. Ohio State
  3. Alabama
  4. Georgia
  5. USC
  6. Texas
  7. Penn State
  8. Ole Miss
  9. Tennessee
  10. Michigan

For comparison, here are the top 10 in the AP Poll:

  1. Ohio State
  2. Penn State
  3. LSU
  4. Miami
  5. Georgia
  6. Oregon
  7. Florida State
  8. Texas
  9. Illinois
  10. Texas A&M
