The Los Angeles Clippers are still in search of their first NBA Finals appearance.
Considering the LA Clippers are in the same city as the Los Angeles Lakers, winning titles is the only way for the franchise to earn respect from NBA fans.
To do so, the Clippers have tried their luck with various head coaches, but right now, they have handed that responsibility to none other than Tyronn Lue.
Ty Lue began his NBA coaching journey in 2011 with the Boston Celtics. He was on the C’s for two seasons as an assistant coach.
Following that, Lue joined the Clippers for a one-year stint in the same capacity. In 2014, Lue landed the job as an associate head coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
However, that was just the beginning of the good things for Lue. He was named the Cavs’ head coach mid-way through the 2015-16 NBA season.
Considering the Cavs were home to LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Love, it must have been a tough first head-coaching job for Lue. But Lue exceeded all expectations as he led the Cavaliers to the 2016 NBA title.
Lue’s tenure came to an end in 2018 as the Cavaliers fired him just six games into the season. He then returned to the Clippers as an assistant coach before becoming the head coach in 2020.
Since Lue took over, the Clippers have gone 234-166 during the regular season, a remarkable 58.5% winning rate. Unfortunately, Lue hasn’t been able to bring the same success come playoff time as the Clippers’ search for an NBA Championship continues.
Before Lue entered the NBA coaching scene, he enjoyed an 11-year stint in the league as a player. As the 23rd overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft, Lue never became a superstar.
However, he knew his role and retired as a 2x NBA champion, playing for the likes of the LA Lakers, Atlanta Hawks, Washington Wizards, and more.
For his career, he averaged 8.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. Once again, these numbers aren’t great, but it helped Lue carve out a decent NBA career, albeit as a journeyman.
