Who Will Compete with Mavericks' Cooper Flagg for ROTY?

DALLAS - Some rookies have already laced up their shoes for the first time as NBA players this year as the summer leagues are kicking off with multiple showcase events.

No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg, however, won't get his first taste of pro action until July 10 ... but as expected, he is already the odds-on favorite to win the 2025-26 NBA Rookie of the Year award at -180.

Flagg will have an immediate chance to thrive in Dallas, not just individually, but with the team alongside stars Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson and Kyrie Irving once he returns from injury.

The Duke phenom won't need to be the top go-to option on a struggling team like many other draftees, but his high basketball IQ and versatile impact should bode well for the Mavs' rookie and give him a very realistic shot at winning the award.

What other draft picks could compete for this year's top rookie performer?

We dive into three names to keep an eye on this season along with Flagg.

VJ Edgecombe, No. 3 overall pick, Philadelphia 76ers

The former Baylor guard put on a show Saturday in his summer debut with 28 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in the Sixers' loss the Utah Jazz.

Edgecombe's superb athleticism was shown on both ends of the floor throughout his 30 minutes in the contest. Below is a monster highlight of Edgecombe throwing down a fast-break jam.

Similar to Flagg, Edgecombe will join a roster that already has reliable stars in Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, allowing the rookie to excel in the positions and roles he's most comfortable in.

With a performance like this as an introduction, you can't not have VJ as a ROTY candidate. FanDuel has his odds currently at +1300 to win, the fourth-best of the class.

Tre Johnson, No. 6 overall pick, Washington Wizards

CBS Sports' Adam Finkelstein had some good things to say about the former Texas Longhorn and his chance at being this year's top rookie against Flagg and others.

"I would feel very good about Cooper, but if I were a betting man, I'd be taking the over on Tre Johnson's points." Finkelstein said about his projected potential. "I think he's going to be in a position in Washington to have as much offensive volume as maybe anyone in the class ... He's got the offensive ability to score in bunches."

Johnson averaged just 9.5 points per game last season, but displayed an array of shot-making skills. He was profiled by many as the best overall shooter in the class, with the ability to knock down shots off balance and at a standstill from all areas of the floor.

FanDuel has Johnson's ROTY odds set at +900, which is runner-up to Flagg.

Ace Bailey, No. 5 overall pick, Utah Jazz

Bailey was outshined by Edgecombe in their debut matchup, which kept Bailey in the headlines after an awkward situation involving his pre-draft behavior with prospective teams.

Although he finished with just eight points in Saturday's win, Bailey showed off some of his elite athleticism and range with an impressive block that not a lot of players can make, let alone a rookie.

His 7-foot wingspan will be a nightmare to deal with if he can improve his defensive awareness. Offensively, the former Rutgers slasher has excellent speed and ball-handling for his 6-7 frame and can beat defenders his size to the paint.

Bailey struggled shooting on Saturday and showed that he'll need to beef up in order to improve his defense, but the most promising aspect of the night was Jazz fans' overwhelming support of the controversial rookie.

“They made me a little nervous,” Bailey said of the crowd’s standing ovation for him after each basket. “It was fun though. Just coming in an arena I’ve never played in and just feeling love from the fans, it was just a blessing.”

Bailey has the third-best odds to win Rookie of the Year at +1000.

Flagg and the Mavericks will play their first NBA Summer League game on July 10 at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN against the Los Angeles Lakers. They will also have a game against Edgecombe's 76ers next week on ESPN.

If Cooper lives up to his ROTY expectations, he'll match the pace set by Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers, who is running away with the award in the WNBA.

Regardless of awards, the future of Dallas basketball is bright with these two.
