Will The Yankees Make Room To Call Up Spencer Jones On Sept. 1?

Spencer Jones has all the tools to be the Yankees’ next big call-up, but the timing isn’t simple. The 6-foot-6 outfielder has struggled in August, hitting .174 despite flashing his raw power with 32 homers on the year. With rosters expanding Sept. 1, the Yankees could take a look, but he isn’t on the 40-man roster. To make room, they’d have to cut someone—and decide if Jones’ upside outweighs his recent slump.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre

  • Jones homered 433 feet off rehabbing Toronto starter Alek Manoah last week but finished 1-for-4. He went 5-for-22 (.227) over six games, and his August line sits at .174 with three homers and 11 RBIs. His average has dipped from .402 to .287.
  • Ian Hamilton has a 10.24 ERA in 10 games since being optioned, allowing 11 runs and 17 hits in 9 2/3 innings.
  • Brendan Beck is 12-3 with a 3.23 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A. With Scranton, he’s 7-1 with a 4.64 ERA in 11 starts, including five innings of two-hit, two-unearned-run ball Saturday vs. Buffalo.

Double-A Somerset

  • George Lombard Jr. is 18-for-21 in stolen base tries and has 52 walks in 90 games, though he’s hitting just .211.
  • Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz (3-2, 2.32 ERA) struck out nine Friday, allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings.
  • Carlos Lagrange (5-5, 3.68 ERA in Double-A; 9-7, 3.83 overall) leads all Yankees minor leaguers with 147 strikeouts.
  • Ben Hess (1-1, 2.70 ERA) set a career high with nine strikeouts Sunday over five innings.

High-A Hudson Valley

  • Kaeden Kent is hitting .130 with one homer and nine RBIs in 14 games.
  • Bryce Cunningham (5-1, 1.78 ERA) has allowed one run and one hit in four innings since returning from the IL June 4.
  • Kyle Carr (7-0, 2.06 ERA) threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings Thursday, striking out seven and walking two.

Single-A Tampa

  • Henry Lalane (shoulder surgery) has a 1.80 ERA in five starts, most recently tossing three scoreless innings Friday with one hit allowed.
  • 2025 first-round pick Dax Kilby is hitting .235 with three RBIs in nine games. Two of his eight hits are doubles.
  • Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek is batting .239 with 10 RBIs and four steals in 15 games.
  • Roderick Arias has 31 steals in 40 attempts and is hitting .211 with seven homers and 49 RBIs in 93 games.
