The Wisconsin Badgers extended a scholarship to an under-the-radar 2028 recruit in January in hopes that early attention will pay off in the end.

Julian Taylor, a 2028 running back from Detroit, Michigan, picked up his fifth scholarship from Wisconsin in January which capped off a flurry of offers. Miami (Ohio), Pittsburgh, Louisville, and Kent State all offer scholarships in the month of January as well just before the Badgers did so.

When asked about what the experience of receiving his first scholarship was like, Taylor stated, “Getting that first offer from Miami of Ohio was a blessing. It really opened my eyes to the fact that my hard work was paying off and that I could play at the next level.” The running back added, “It gave me a lot more confidence, but also motivation to keep pushing because I knew more opportunities could follow.”

Wisconsin Badgers Scholarship Offer to 2028 Running Back Julian Taylor Comes With Rich History

While some programs have various different things that can be offered to a recruit such as a strong positional staff or state of the art locker rooms, the Wisconsin Badgers can offer running backs the chance to become part of history. When considering who “running back university” is, Wisconsin has long been at the top of the conversation and continue to reel in top recruits who want to become the next player to add their name to the legacy.

For Taylor, historical success of the position at a given program is certainly a factor to his recruitment, but perhaps not the main factor. “That’s definitely something I think about, but at the same time I’m looking at the full picture, the coaches, the culture, and how I fit in the program,” stated Taylor.

However, Taylor did also state, “Wisconsin showing interest in me was huge. Their track record with running backs speaks for itself with guys going to the league and having success.” The production of running backs is important to Taylor, but the development of a real relationship with the staff and the culture of a program will be higher ranking factors.

Another possible factor is location, as many recruits opt to stay close to home despite potentially lucrative opportunities elsewhere. When asked about potentially staying in Michigan for his collegiate career, Taylor stated, “Being from Michigan, of course there’s pride in possibly playing at home in front of family and friends. That would mean a lot.”

However, Taylor may not be fully sold on staying close to home if the surrounding circumstances do not align with his goals. “But at the end of the day, I’ve got to look at what’s best for me in the long run the coaching staff, the system, and where I feel I can grow the most as a player and a person,” stated the running back.

For the Wisconsin Badgers, the staff will need to be in the process for the long haul as Taylor has only just begun to see his exposure take off. The running back will likely be in a much different position in the next few months as the season progresses, which could alter how the Wisconsin staff goes about recruiting Taylor.
