The Wisconsin Badgers previously offered a scholarship to a rising tight end in the 2027 recruiting class and have since kept close contact.
Jackson Ballinger, a talented tight end and defensive end prospect from Centerburg, Ohio, has established himself as one of the more promising tight end prospects in the class. The recruit currently holds scholarship offers from programs such as Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, and Wisconsin. The Badgers extended an offer to Ballinger in May, and have since kept a line of communication with the recruit.
Ballinger may not have an official ranking set on many databases, but that has not stopped the recruit from stacking up offers left and right. When asked about the scholarship offers and what the experience has been like, Ballinger stated, “Each offer presents its own unique opportunity, however 100% of all of my offers have left me feeling blessed and excited about my future.”
Following the offer from the Wisconsin Badgers, the staff and tight ends coach Nate Letton began to keep close contact with the recruit. “I’ve talked to Coach Letton and several other coaches on the staff there. The offer came directly from Coach Letton but all communication with the staff has been promising,” stated Ballinger.
The relationship between Ballinger and the Badgers has been both a positive and growing one largely due to a significant change in the NCAA rulebook. Previously, the live contact period between coaches and recruits was far later in the process, but coaches may now speak to recruits earlier and has led to many relationships being formed early.
“This summer was big for my recruitment because the rules changed so that I was able to communicate freely with the coaches. That led to me being able to develop more relationships and learn more about each program,” stated Ballinger”
When asked about what has led to much of the early interest, Ballinger stated, “Something that I would say sets me apart would be my versatility when it comes to both blocking and receiving. Often times Tight Ends will specialize in one or the other. However, I am competitive in both aspects.”
Ballinger is not afraid to do the dirty work that receiving threats or smaller tight ends often do not want to do. The mentality of the tight end recruit on the field is also part of the reason why many notable programs have been keeping a close eye on Ballinger.
For the Wisconsin Badgers, the tight end position is far more valuable in the new Jeff Grimes offense compared to being an additional receiver in the old Phil Longo offense. Tight ends need to block and block well while also possessing the necessary athleticism to get open in a timely manner. Grimes asks for a lot out of the tight ends and that should be a task that Ballinger could take on without a problem.
The Wisconsin Badgers recently added tight ends Jack Janda and Jack Sievers to the 2026 recruiting class to bolster the room. The duo have different play-styles but where the two share similarities is in the high-motor, athletic play each delivers. Janda is also a promising defensive end prospect with a quick release off of the edge while Sievers is a freakish athlete for the position.
Enter Jackson Ballinger, and a third tight end would match the same upside while also providing a great 6-foot-4-inch, 230-pound frame. Ballinger also shares similar success as a defensive end like Janda with a quick release and great tackling skills. The tight end also possesses great speed for the position while maintaining the correct amount of size.
