The PGA Championship on Tuesday released the list of the playing field for the second major of the year. The tournament scheduled to take place from May 16th at the Valhalla course, will feature Tiger Woods and the world’s top 100 players.

Woods, the 15-time major champion, will be making his fourth start at the Valhalla. His playoff win at this course in 2000 saw him defend his PGA Championship. This was his third straight major win which eventually saw him complete the “Tiger Slam” after he won the Masters in 2001.

His previous appearance at this site was one to forget though. In 2014, Woods shot successive rounds of 74 while playing with a some pain in the back and ended up missing the cut.

The news of Tiger Woods playing in this major event comes a few days after he received a special exemption from the USGA to play in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst in June. Woods had failed to qualify for the U.S. Open due to his OWGR rankings.

The exemption that he received from winning the 2019 Masters had also expired. This left him with no other possible ways to appear in the third major of the year. With the Open Championship allowing the past champions to play till the age of 55, the 48-year-old golfer is now on pace to play in all four majors of the year.

This year the PGA Championship field boasts arguably the strongest field with all of the top 100 players in the World Rankings set to tee off next week. A total of 156 players have been named for this tournament, meaning Brooks Koepka, the defending champion, will have to bring out his A game if he wants to claim his sixth major next week.

Brooks Koepka aiming to repeat back-to-back wins at the PGA Championship

With the 106th PGA Championship on the horizon, five-time major champion Brooks Koepka is eyeing history. He is aiming to repeat back-to-back wins at the PGA Championship this year as he hopes to defend his crown which he won last year at Oak Hill.

Koepka’s win in May last year him become the first LIV Golf star to claim victory at a PGA Tour event. The four-time LIV Golf winner thinks it would be “cool” if he went back-to-back just like he did it if before in the years 2018 and 2019.

In 2018, Koepka claimed his second straight U.S. Open title and won the PGA Championship as well. He went on to retain the PGA Championship crown in 2019 at Bethpage and thus went back-to-back in two different major championships.

I've gone back to back at the PGA (Championship) and the US Open. Hopefully looking to do it again, I don't know if it's ever been done but that'd be kind of a cool thing. Brooks Koepka said in a press conference.

If Koepka is successful next week, he will become just the second golfer after Tiger Woods to claim successive wins at the PGA Championships on two separate occasions. Woods first won the title in 1999 and defended it successfully in 2000. He later went on to win this event in 2006 and 2007. With momentum on his side following the win in Singapore, it will be interesting to see how Koepka performs.
