In a much anticipated round two of play there were many impressive outings like the 85 spot jump up on the leader-board seen from Si Woo Kim, while the world No 1. , scratched and clawed his way back to make the projected cut-line. After a tough round one, Scottie Scheffler hit the practice facilities with a swiftness. After declining to speak to the media, he came out with an expected chip on his shoulder looking to settle things. It was 1,274 days ago that Scheffler last missed a cut, now it is 1,275 days. Ultimately overcoming a 2-over 73 Thursday, following it up in Scheffler fashion Friday with a six under 65. When many thought this could be the first time we saw Scheffler cut in ages, he turned things around and is now still in contention for another Phoenix Open victory.
Now, with one rough round one and name within the projected cut’s. Scheffler found himself in hot water, but the world No 1. couldn’t handle it. Interestingly enough the first Tour title won by the veteran in 2022, came at this very event. Just one of his two career victories where he has managed to overcome trailing by seven or more points, through 36 holes.
“I’ve also been a proponent of saying you can’t really find it during the tournament week, but I found a little something in my grip yesterday that seemed to really help me get my hands more securely on the club,” Scheffler said. “Struck it much better today. … felt a bit lost out there at times yesterday, so today felt a lot better. Felt more in control of my game. You can obviously see that through the cleaner card today.”
His ability to find a way to win despite whatever odds may be stacked against him at the moment, is what makes him arguably the best to play the game of golf. Even with those within his group like Chris Gotterup having themselves a spectacular tournament.
“The made-cut streak thing is a bit skewed these days. I think when you look at the signature event model, we have some cuts, but they’re not really cuts in the traditional sense of how the Tour was for a really long time,” Scheffler said. “You look at days like today. I had an awful day on the golf course yesterday all around, pretty much. So to come out to today, stay really patient — especially after not getting off to a great start — to stay patient, grind it out, put myself back into a position where I’ve put myself in contention from this exact position in this golf tournament, and it’s one of those places you can get hot. That’s what I’ll be looking to do over the weekend.
With already two career victories having come in similar predicaments, there is still a chance for Scheffler to grab his third. Yes, it will take almost perfect or close to such remaining rounds for that to happen. With a much needed spark felt in the game of the veteran, it’s only smart to keep the what if’s open and energy high.
