Aaron Rai surprised the golfing world with his incredible success at the 2026 PGA Championship last weekend.

The leaderboard at Aronimink Golf Club was as closely contested as any major championship in recent memory.

Only Rai was able to break away from the pack in the final round with a remarkable five-under-par 65.

The Englishman’s three-shot victory over Jon Rahm and Alex Smalley even made a unique piece of PGA Championship history.

Aaron Rai joins Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player with rare achievement

Aaron Rai became the first player to win the PGA Championship while improving his score in all four rounds.

He is also the first to achieve that feat in any major championship since Mark O’Meara at the 1998 Masters.

Ben Hogan (1951 US Open and 1953 Open), Gary Player (1959 Open) and Jack Nicklaus (1986 Masters) are the only others on the list.

Rai’s rounds of 70, 69, 67 and 65 suggest he was becoming more and more comfortable on the golf course at Aronimink.

His sensible strategy of making fairways and greens paid dividends, as others mistakenly prioritised distance off the tee.

Rai also made some amazing putts in the final round, including a 70-foot birdie on the 17th green to take a three-shot lead.

His composure under pressure was impeccable throughout the day, never once looking flustered by the occasion.

With the added confidence of becoming a major champion, you could not write off Rai adding another to his tally.
