Despite not being the archetypal powerhouse on the links, Max Homa catapulted himself into legendary status during The Sentry's third round in Hawaii. Homa, who isn't well known for his power off the tee, struck a colossal drive on the seventh — a behemoth 477-yard shot that entered the history books as the longest in the PGA Tour's ShotLink Era.
"LOVE Kapalua," posted Jack Hirsh of Golf.com, alongside an image that underscored the otherworldliness of Homa’s tee shot on a 525-yard par-4.
What an incredible display of power.
This drive wasn't all brute force, though. It encapsulated the essence of skill, environment, and the magic of the moment — a perfect mix of conditions including a downhill trajectory, a sharp dogleg right, and the assistance of every golfer's best pal, a friendly tailwind.
Homa brought some comedic charm following the round. "For it being uphill into the wind with no roll, I was pretty proud of this one.”
Despite the fabled saying, "Drive for show, putt for dough," this drive isn’t one to be simply written off. Homa skillfully made use of his monumental drive by securing a birdie on that hole. He demonstrated finesse and strategic play that contributed to his five-under 68 finish, climbing to T17 at 15 under, six shots behind the leader, Chris Kirk.
