Could "The Match" become an annual event? Phil Mickelson is keen on the idea. Handout Photo-USA TODAY Sports

Phil Mickelson wants 'The Match' to be an annual event

The second installment of "The Match" was a huge success, and it drew gigantic ratings with Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson all taking the course to raise money for charity.

It seems that we may have not seen the last of the four legends on the golf course, though. Mickelson discussed the future of the event in an interview with Arash Markazi of the Los Angeles Times, and it appears "The Match" could become an annual event.

“I don’t know what specifically it will look like but it would be a competition while also being entertaining and getting the right mixture of individuals to have their personalities come out the way Peyton and Tom shined in this last one,” Mickelson told Markazi about the future of the match.

“They were humanized with their golf game yet they were competitive and they were funny and entertaining. They let their sense of humor come out. It’s about finding the right mix of those competitors and I don’t think we could get two better guys than who we had in Peyton and Tom. Going forward that will be the challenge. How do we improve on that?”

Woods and Manning have already agreed to a third meeting, but it sounds like Mickelson and Brady sure do want a rematch.

The foursome raised $20 million for coronavirus relief efforts, and the combo of Woods and Manning stopped Brady and Mickelson's bid at a late comeback to win by one shot.

If we get to see some of the world's biggest athletes take the course every year, it's sure to be a treat. And who knows, maybe next year we'll get a larger match with more athletes involved.
