This past weekend in the sport of golf has brought out the stars, top tier golfers, excited fans, and some of the best golf course views in the game. All of these things became a given at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. What was not a given in those categories week the weekend of play, yet another remarkable turnaround performance from Scottie Scheffler. Being the World No. 1, many would think these types of occurrences are normal. Yet, his trajectory to another top five finish was everything except expected and normal. Scheffler after 18 holes was tied for 62nd place, after 36 holes tied for 34th, after 54 holes jumped up to a tie for 22nd, and finally is eyeing a top five finish in round four. If that wasn’t enough, he finished round four with a career high three eagles in a round.
It all came down to the final round at Pebble Beach, Sunday through the evening. With what started out as another down start to a tournament for Scheffler, he got things cooking during the second round. His ability to stay poised, added the much needed comeback factor the veteran already possessed.
“You never want to limit yourself,” Scheffler said .“I’d obviously like to be in a better position on the leader board. But yeah, with crazy weather, crazy things can happen and we’ll see what I can do tomorrow.”
Round three final result came with five birdies on the day, furthering the reality of Scheffler having a real chance to win it all. With those like Collin Morikawa (ultimately wins the tournament with birdie putt), Akshay Bhatia, pressure was a nonstop constant to finish things out.
“You’re not going to get it all back in one hole,” Scheffler said. “It kind of at times felt today that we were playing a wolf game just because you’ve got to step on the tee box, got to make birdie. Next tee, got to make birdie. It’s one of those deals.”
It has now been two consecutive tournaments where Scheffler has gotten off to a slow start. Somehow still managing to battle his way into talks of tournament winner. At the Phoenix Open he finished tied for third, and most recently finishing in a tie for fourth at Pebble Beach.
A strong start in the first round from Scheffler may be the much needed aspect, to see another stretch of consecutive tournament wins. When he finds a way to get into that zone it’s hard to stop, although by that time he’s a round and two shots behind. Yet when you can put together a final round of three eagle shots, it’s a positive takeaway nonetheless.
“These are some of the weeks when you look back, I’m very proud of sticking with it, not giving up even when I felt like things were going against me this week,” he said. “Just kept fighting, kept trying to hit shots, kept trying to execute.”
All eyes should be on a competitive Genesis Invitational, taking place Feb, 19th.
