When the 2026 Masters begins on April 9, Tiger Woods won't be on the course showcasing his skills.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office arrested Woods last Friday on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. It was reported that he had opioid pills on him at the scene of the crash. The authorities also said the 15-time major champion was "lethargic" while being interviewed.
On Tuesday night, Woods announced that he's "stepping away for a period of time" to address his health.
“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery,” Woods said. “I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”
This statement confirmed golf fans' worst fears: Tiger won't be competing for a sixth green jacket this April.
Fred Ridley, the chairman of Augusta National Golf Club, released a statement on Woods' decision to seek treatment ahead of the 2026 Masters.
"Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament fully support Tiger Woods as he focuses on his well-being," Ridley said. "Although Tiger will not be joining us in person next week, his presence will be felt here in Augusta."
CBS confirmed that it'll take a straightforward approach to Woods' situation during its coverage of The Masters.
“It’s not fair to anyone for us to speak about it or speculate. We just won’t do that. He and his team are going to have to be the ones who speak about it. It’s only fair if that’s the case,” CBS Sports president David Berson said. “Listen, Tiger is a story, obviously, wherever he is. But our job during the Tournament itself will be to cover the Tournament. Tiger obviously has a tremendous legacy at Augusta National with all his Masters victories and his voice in the sport. So, of course, we’ll touch on things as necessary as news dictates. But for coverage of the event itself, we’re going to cover the event.”
Fans are wishing Woods all the best as he steps out of the spotlight to focus on himself.
