Ben Griffin ran into a familiar problem in the final round of the Procore Championship: Scottie Scheffler.
Griffin held his own with a solid final round, but Scheffler closed strong with a 67 to move past him and take the win.
Even so, the man from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, could still take positives from what has been an impressive season overall.
He already has two wins this year and several close calls, and his Ryder Cup selection adds another highlight to his campaign.
Afterwards, Griffin spoke to the media about facing Scheffler and what it was like watching the world number one make his move on Sunday.
Plenty of players have already had to take a front-row seat to Scheffler’s brilliance this season, and Griffin got one more turn at the Procore Championship.
No one in the game manages pressure quite like the world number one, who seems to thrive when the stakes are highest.
And according to Griffin, you simply have to expect Scheffler to make a run.
“Well, you know, you expect it,” he remarked.
“I knew I needed to shoot a lower round. Just the fact that I had a chance shooting 2 under, 3 under, I honestly thought I needed to go a little bit lower today. He’s a hell of a player, he’s got the resume that’s better than pretty much everyone here.”
Griffin clearly respects Scheffler’s game, but he does not believe the gap between them is unbridgeable.
“He’s just like every other player; everyone can beat everyone if you play well enough.”
If anything held him back in Napa Valley on Sunday, though, it was his putting that let him down most, according to Griffin.
“No. It felt great off the start; even felt great kind of middle of the round,” he continued. “Just –– just didn’t fall for me on some putts that I thought were good putts.
“I hit some putts that I thought I hit decent putts that didn’t fall. I still made some five-, six-footers. I think I just left myself way too many of them. You need to either convert those or make a few more from mid range. It’s all good, I’ll get to work, I’ll look at things and I’ll practice hard this week and make sure I’m ready for the Ryder Cup.”
Griffin came up short in his bid to win the Procore Championship, but the defeat did not overshadow another solid performance. He has proven again this season that he belongs at this level.
With the Ryder Cup just two weeks away, the North Carolina native looks ready to play his part for Team USA.
Scheffler’s ability to handle pressure is well established, and once again he showed why he is at the top of the rankings. Still, there were positives for Griffin to take from how he played across the week.
Bethpage Black will be an intense setting, and it could suit someone with his energy. Despite being a late addition to Keegan Bradley’s side, he might end up playing a bigger role than expected.
