Ben Silverman on top at Barracuda Championship
Joseph Cress-USA TODAY Sports

Ben Silverman of Canada racked up seven birdies over his final nine holes to shoot a plus-19 and take the first-round lead at the Barracuda Championship on Thursday at Tahoe Mountain Club in Truckee, Calif.

The Barracuda Championship uses a Modified Stableford scoring format that encourages risk-taking. Birdies are worth two points, eagles are worth five and albatrosses are worth eight. Each par is zero points while bogeys are minus-1 point and double bogey or anything worse is worth minus-3.

Silverman is two points clear of Kelly Kraft at plus-17, while Nate Lashley is in third place at plus-15. Sam Ryder and South Korea's S.H. Kim are tied for fourth at plus-14.

Silverman piled up 10 birdies in all. After opening with his only bogey of the day at the 10th hole, he birdied Nos. 11, 13 and 15 before making his charge on the front nine. He stuck his approach shot at the par-4 first hole within a foot of the cup, and five of his seven birdies on that side came from inside 6 feet.

Silverman's final birdie came on a 22-foot putt at the par-3 eighth.

"This place is gorgeous," Silverman said. "Really like this golf course. You try to put the points out of your head and just focus on making birdies and adding up your score normal. You get rewarded for birdies and the points kind of take care of themselves."

The 36-year-old is in the hunt for his first win on the PGA Tour at this alternate event opposite the Open Championship.

Kraft, 35, is like Silverman: a journeyman who has yet to break through for that maiden PGA Tour victory. Kraft lost his card and is playing the season on conditional-tour status. A victory would lead to big changes for him.

"This year I guess since the elevated stuff and guys aren't getting in those, everybody else, Korn Ferry categories and all those guys are pretty much playing whatever they get into, so there is really not much for my category to fill the field," said Kraft, the 2011 U.S. Amateur champion. "Hadn't been a whole lot of fun, but I've got a couple little ones at home so I've had a little more time at home, so that's been great. You know, basically just playing everything I can get into."

Some PGA Tour winners this season are in the field because they didn't qualify for The Open. Canadian Taylor Pendrith, who won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, and Nick Dunlap, who won The American Express, are among six players tied at plus-12.

Keegan Bradley warned of backlash over one potential Ryder Cup selection

With the FedEx Cup playoffs coming up, Keegan Bradley knows he doesn’t have much time left to finalise his six captain’s picks for the Ryder Cup. Scottie Scheffler is the only American who has officially qualified so far, but it would be a huge shock if Xander Schauffele, J.J. Spaun, Bryson DeChambeau, Russell Henley and Harris English don’t end up joining him. DeChambeau’s place has already been confirmed by Bradley. Beyond that group, it’s difficult to imagine Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa being left out. And Bradley’s own position was solidified by his recent win at the Travelers Championship. While seasoned players like Brian Harman, Patrick Cantlay, Sam Burns, and Wyndham Clark bring valuable experience to the high-pressure environment of Bethpage, newcomers such as Cameron Young, Ben Griffin, Maverick McNealy, Andrew Novak, and Chris Gotterup are all looking to make their debut. Jordan Spieth’s Ryder Cup spot under scrutiny as Keegan Bradley faces tough decision There is another name that is likely to come up in conversations between Bradley and his staff over the next few weeks. It has been an odd season for Jordan Spieth since coming back from injury. He has looked more steady on the PGA Tour, but that consistency has not turned into much in terms of results, with just four top 10 finishes so far. Spieth is currently 48th in the FedEx Cup standings, so he’ll have chances to make an impression soon. But speaking on Fried Egg Golf, Andy Johnson said he does not understand why Spieth is even being considered for the team right now. “If they roll out Spieth and he doesn’t do anything for the next couple of weeks, if they play their buddy ball, the fans are going to have the knives out. “The Spieth selection is wild. He’s 27th in Ryder Cup points. He might not make it past the first week of the playoffs. If it wasn’t for sponsor exemptions, he wouldn’t even be in the playoffs. “This is the thing, this is where the Spieth thing just does not make sense, how you could put him on this team. He’s 27th in points, and in between there you have guys that are playing quantitatively good golf. “You’ve got Cameron Young, you’ve got Gotterup, you’ve got Wyndham Clark starting to play better. And Wyndham Clark’s won a major this decade. You have so many guys that are actually playing good golf. “I don’t understand how the numbers are saying that Spieth is playing good golf, because when I roll down his list of accomplishments, it’s like T35, T22, T38. I don’t understand the numbers and how Data Golf has him so highly thought of.” Jordan Spieth targeting a sixth Ryder Cup appearance at Bethpage After his first couple of appearances, Spieth looked like he would be a fixture on the US Ryder Cup team for years to come. Early on, he formed a strong partnership with Patrick Reed. His connection with Justin Thomas also showed promise. The two earned three points together in France in 2018, giving the US another reliable pairing. But over the last two Ryder Cups, Spieth has managed just 2.5 points from eight matches. Despite his reputation and experience, recent form hasn’t translated into results on the biggest stage. Spieth’s season hasn’t been without its moments, but it would be hard to argue that he’s done enough to lock down a spot on this year’s team. If Bradley does choose him, there will be no shortage of players who feel they deserved the place instead.

Green Bay Packers: MarShawn Lloyd’s Injury Opens Door For Experiment

The Green Bay Packers are dealing with some injuries heading into their first game in the 2025 NFL preseason. Among the hurt bodies on their roster is running back MarShawn Lloyd, who has impressed at Packers training camp but is down with a lower-body injury he suffered last week. The injury was initially blamed on a hit by defensive back Nate Hobbs, but it was later found out to be a non-contact type. With the former USC Trojans running back out of commission at the moment, the Packers are said to be open to testing out some creative approaches in the backfield. “I’m told the outlook for MarShawn Lloyd’s groin injury is roughly one to two weeks, so he could be back as early as next week,” wrote Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. “Don’t be surprised if the Packers, who love versatility on offense, experiment with backups Chris Brooks and Emanuel Wilson playing hybrid or fullback-type roles at times.” When will Green Bay Packers RB MarsShawn Lloyd be healthy again? As said by Fowler, the earliest Lloyd could return to the field is next week, which would rule him out for this coming Saturday’s preseason matchup versus the New York Jets at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. Also, under that projection, he can be back in action for the meeting with the Indianapolis Colts on the road in Week 2. The Packers can also just be extra careful and hold him back for the entire offseason, as they look forward to having Lloyd 100 percent healthy for their first assignment in the 2025 NFL season, which is a home game against the Detroit Lions.

Knee operation: Kirby Dach not yet back on his feet

Two years ago to the day, Canadiens fans were optimistic about Kirby Dach’s future in Montreal: the 6’4 forward had just collected 38 points in 58 games – in his first campaign in Quebec – and many wondered whether Dach had a better chance of establishing himself as a first NHL center than captain Nick Suzuki. The past 730 days have proven otherwise, but that’s not the point this morning. Since joining the Canadiens, Dach has earned a reputation as a fragile player. Virus, shoulder, upper body (concussion?), lower body, knee(ACL and MCL), knee again… Let’s just say that injuries haven’t spared Dach since he arrived in Montreal. In fact, injuries haven’t spared Dach since he started playing hockey. He has never played more than 70 games in a single season, and has only broken the 60-game barrier three times in nine junior or pro seasons. Last February, Dach underwent a second operation on his right knee in the space of 18 months. Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes may tell us that Kirby Dach is fine, but we still have our doubts. Especially whenyou consider that, with the Canadiens’ recent additions and departures, Kirby Dach is still the team’s second center on the organizational chart. content-ads]Last week, I wondered where Kirby was ? We’ve seen plenty of Habs players skating at the CN Complex this summer, but not Kirby Dach. And I had to work like a monk to catch a glimpse of him in a video filmed at Nick Suzuki’s wedding! Yesterday, I was told that Kirby Dach was spending the summer in Edmonton with Kaiden Guhle – Dach is from Saskatchewan and Guhle is from Alberta – and that Dach was still in rehab. I repeat: five months after his most recent knee operation and some 40 days before the start of practice camp, Kirby Dach is still not recovered and ready to play. Good informants spotted him in an Edmonton gym doing squats with loads that look like the ones I used to take when I went to Econofitness, not the ones an NHL player uses [content-ads]This explains it: when he came to Montreal for his captain’s wedding, Kirby Dach couldn’t – or wouldn’t – skate with his teammates in Brossard. It’s worth noting that Dach is also very quiet on social networks – his last post was in November 2024 – probably in an effort to be forgotten… to go unnoticed. Spending the summer in Alberta, rather than in Montreal (with his chums at Osheaga), makes sense, when you think about it…Let’s just say that the chances of Dach starting his season at the same time as everyone else in two months’ time are pretty slim, which is cause for concern for those hoping to see the Canadiens in the playoffs in 2026. Yes, the Kirby Dach problem would be solved if a guy like Mason MacTavish-good offensively, defensively, physically and in the face-off circle-came to Montreal, but let’s just say that the odds of that happening this summer are very low. And you can’t make plans with very improbable things![spacer title=’Prolongation’]Matthew Tkachuk, who was injured last winter while throwing down the gloves at the 4 Nations tournament, underwent surgery last month (hernia and adductor). According to the latest information from Elliotte Friedman, Tkachuk could return to action just before the Olympic Games. Let’s hope Kirby Dach doesn’t have to wait as long as Tkachuk.
