Bryson DeChambeau is set to start things off for Team USA in the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
In the highly anticipated Friday foursomes match, DeChambeau and Justin Thomas are set to tee off against Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton.
Speculation about a possible DeChambeau-Thomas partnership had been growing since Wednesday, and Keegan Bradley has now confirmed it. If both players hit form, they will be tough to beat, but each can also be unpredictable and wear their emotions on their sleeves.
On the other side, Europe will go with a proven partnership from Rome. Luke Donald is putting faith in his team’s experience to lead the way early. Speaking ahead of the match, the 32-year-old from California shared his thoughts on facing Rahm and Hatton.
Rahm is coming off a strong season, having won the LIV Golf individual title, while Hatton’s Legion XIII team – which also includes the Spaniard – beat DeChambeau’s Crushers GC in the team final. Both know their way around Bethpage Black.
In that landscape, the American star recognised his opponents’ talent by saying: “We’ve got a big responsibility and role. We’re going to be going up against a great team, Rahm and Hatton. They’re a formidable force, but we want to send a message.”
Thomas has struggled off the tee at times, so Europe might look to take advantage when he’s hitting first. Still, Bradley seems confident in what they can do together.
DeChambeau sounded eager about playing in front of home fans, especially being out first. He said he “could not ask for a better pairing” and expects a “tsunami of a wave of support” from the crowd.
The atmosphere at Bethpage Black should be intense from the start. Tommy Fleetwood played down any concerns about the crowd, saying that fans are what make the Ryder Cup special.
But both Rahm and Hatton are emotional players who thrive on intensity, though it remains to be seen how they will handle New York’s rowdy reception.
Donald has gone with a steady pairing to start, and one that has not lost together yet. Rahm and Hatton have teamed up three times in the Ryder Cup, holding a 2-0-1 record.
They first joined forces in 2021 at Whistling Straits against DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler in a match that ended all square.
Two years ago in Rome, they opened with a four and three win over Scheffler and Sam Burns, then followed it up with another win, this time two and one over Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay.
Rahm’s Ryder Cup record against Thomas includes one win and one loss. In 2021, The Spaniard and Jordan Spieth defeated Thomas three and one. However, in 2018, he and Ian Poulter lost to the same duo.
Hatton, meanwhile, has faced Thomas in every Ryder Cup he has played without ever coming out on top. He will be hoping to change that narrative this time around.
