Collin Morikawa did not make the US Ryder Cup team on points, and his form leading up to Bethpage Black raised questions about Keegan Bradley’s decision to pick him as a wildcard.
Morikawa has not cracked the top 10 on the PGA Tour since March and has missed three cuts in that span, a run of results that hardly inspired confidence ahead of the Ryder Cup.
Bradley chose not to leave Morikawa out, and it was a call that backfired for Team USA at Bethpage Black.
Across all three days on Long Island, the 28-year-old looked well short of his best.
His game simply did not match up with what was needed at Bethpage Black, where length off the tee and putting are key strengths he lacks.
The decision was costly. Bradley sent Morikawa out twice in foursomes alongside Harris English, and those matches played a part in swinging momentum away from the US side.
Many fans thought he should have been left out of Bradley’s picks, and they were proved right, with the California native managing only half a point from three appearances.
It has been a long stretch of poor form for Morikawa, and his performance at Bethpage Black was just the latest chapter in that story.
He finished 15th out of the 24 players in overall strokes gained for the week. In truth, it could have been even lower given how things played out.
With so much to prove in 2026, there is no shortage of work ahead if he hopes to turn things around.
After Team Europe’s win over the United States, Morikawa posted a message on Instagram reflecting on his experience.
The six-time PGA Tour winner chose to focus on what he took from the week rather than dwell on the result.
He wrote: “Not every day will go exactly to plan, but every day has something to be thankful for. Forever grateful.”
Morikawa’s play was a bit better than many had expected going in.
Even so, he still finished in the lower half of the strokes gained total rankings.
Stats | Morikawa’s Ryder Cup rank |
Strokes gained off the tee | 6th |
Strokes gained approach | 12th |
Strokes gained around the green | 17th |
Strokes gained putting | 18th |
Strokes gained total | 15th |
His putting really let him down, especially when he needed to hole out for a crucial point.
It is impossible to say how things would have played out if Bradley had chosen himself over Morikawa.
Perhaps, had the US captain chosen someone like Maverick McNealy, the team might have emerged victorious.
But that is all speculation, and it makes no difference now. Morikawa has to shift focus back to rediscovering his form ahead of 2026.
