The 2025 FedExCup playoffs officially came to an end over the weekend, after a hard fought Tour Championship by next level golfers. One in particular, Tommy Fleetwood who peaked at the right time and walked away victorious. Yet this win was much bigger than the eye could decipher, and meant the world to the Englishman and company. After 163 PGA TOUR events, 30 top-five finishes and a half-dozen runners-up, Fleetwood could finally call himself a PGA TOUR winner. There is no better storybook ending to a season like this for Fleetwood, now having the chance to see his name in talks of the best.
Now through 163 career Tour events, it is understandable that Fleetwood would have frustrations and questions. Many in the sport play continuous events without a victory, and continue to put their best foot forward. Exactly what the veteran placed into his mind, the desirable next tournament and moment mentality. Having done so, resulted in the very chance to walk away a FedExCup Champion.
“I think it’s easy for anybody to say that they are resilient, that they bounce back, that they have fight,” Fleetwood said. “It’s different when you actually have to prove it.”
Proving his desire to not only the field of competitors but himself, proved to be the extra push he needed. Fighting off those like Scotty Scheffler, and Russel Henley, the competition was as intense as anyone could imagine. The many heartbreaks and long tournaments resulting in close finishes, is what ultimately prepped the 34-year-old for his big time moment.
“You have to deal with those little demons that are in the back of your mind, and doubt creeps in,” Fleetwood said. “You remember what you got wrong, don’t want to get it wrong again, and you have to force yourself to think of the positives.”
Although Fleetwood was able to end the weekend victorious with $10 million in the bag, his dreams and motivations have only been more amplified. Getting a taste of the much deserved spotlight is now the baseline for the vet, many times coming up short he now knows the required depths for victory.
Fleetwood’s 30 top-fives and 44 top-10s before earning a first PGA TOUR victory are the most in the past four decades. His win Sunday evening, garnered the attention of some high names like LeBron James and even Tiger Woods. Woods took the time to show his respects to Fleetwood and congratulate him on such an achievement.
“Your journey is a reminder that hard work, resilience, and heart do pay off. No one deserves it more. Congrats Tommy Fleetwood!,” Woods said.
Taking his lap around the East Lake Golf Club after knocking in a par to finish at 18- under and three strokes ahead, the emotions came about. The cheers and even tears by Fleetwood, putting in perspective the sense of weight lifted off his shoulders. Now expected to continue his career in search of win after win, building on that first ever Tour victory and FedExCup championship.
“Like I said, I’ve been a PGA Tour winner for a long time. It’s just always been in my mind,” Fleetwood said.
