First in 40 years: Bryson DeChambeau replicates Bernhard Langer feat at Ryder Cup

If the US had managed to pull off a comeback win at the 2025 Ryder Cup, Bryson DeChambeau’s fightback from five down to halve his match with Matthew Fitzpatrick would have been seen as a key moment for Keegan Bradley’s team.

DeChambeau’s return to the Ryder Cup was always going to draw attention. Since making an impact alongside Scottie Scheffler at Whistling Straits in 2021, he has become one of the game’s most popular figures.

Expectations were high, especially after Bradley told him during The Open Championship that he would be part of the squad even before his qualification was confirmed.

But despite his efforts on Sunday against Fitzpatrick, the week did not quite live up to expectations, as DeChambeau finished with just 1.5 points after five matches.

Bryson DeChambeau sets unusual Ryder Cup record on return at Bethpage Black

Ahead of Bethpage, much of the discussion centred on how Bradley would fit DeChambeau into his plans.

Before this year, DeChambeau had only played with Scottie Scheffler, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods in the Ryder Cup.

His stint alongside Mickelson in 2018 was especially rough during a tough week for Team USA.

Paul Azinger had shared some positive insights before the event, saying after a conversation with Bradley that he was confident in how the captain planned to use DeChambeau.

But watching it all unfold, it is hard to believe things went according to any original script.

DeChambeau started off with Justin Thomas in the opening match, but they fell 4&3 to Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton.

Later that day, his pairing with Ben Griffin did not fare much better, losing by one hole to Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood.

That afternoon matchup against Rose and Fleetwood also marked Griffin’s last appearance until Sunday.

On Saturday morning though, DeChambeau and Cameron Young managed a solid 4&2 win over Matthew Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Åberg.

Still, it was not enough to shift momentum, as Rose and Fleetwood beat them again in session four – this time with Scheffler joining Bryson.

In the end, DeChambeau played alongside four different teammates over the week – something you do not often see unless a team is chasing momentum or trying to spark a change in form.

It suggests Bradley may have abandoned his original strategy once Europe took control early on. In fact, you would have to go back nearly four decades to find another player who cycled through so many pairings over one event.

The last time this happened was way back in 1985, when Bernhard Langer partnered with four different teammates across the first two days of play.

But while more than one hundred players have appeared five times in a single Ryder Cup since then, none besides DeChambeau have been asked to work alongside four separate partners during their run until now.

Bryson DeChambeau’s unusual Ryder Cup role highlights ongoing questions for Team USA

He was not the reason Team USA fell short. In fact, DeChambeau had plenty of support within the team, especially after the effort he had put in leading up to Bethpage.

Still, his role and results do raise questions about how best to use his skill set. It has never been simple, even with all the ability he brings. More points on the board would have changed the narrative completely.

If you had told DeChambeau before the Ryder Cup that he would do something not seen in 40 years, he likely would have welcomed it.

The only thing is, that record is probably not one he will look back on fondly.
