Former World No.1 Adam Scott Claims ‘No Developments’ Have Taken Place Regarding Reunification of Golf Amid PGA Tour-PIF Merger Talks

Ahead of the Wyndham Championship, former World No.1 Adam Scott opened up about the reunification of the game of golf. While addressing the reporters, Scott expressed that major ‘no developments‘ have taken place since the meetings earlier this year.

It has been more than 2 years since a shocking golf merger between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) was announced. In June 2023, Commissioner Jay Monahan, along with PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, would announce a merger deal that would reunite the sport.

The world of golf has been left divided since the establishment of LIV Golf. The 54-hole circuit, which is backed by the PIF of Saudi Arabia, landed some of the biggest names from the PGA Tour. Stars like Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, and Bryson DeChambeau would leave the tour and join LIV Golf on big money deals.

One of the biggest aims of the merger deal is to bring everyone back together and play under one tour. Since the deal was announced, there have been several talks. However, the merger deal is yet to go through.

During the press conference at the Wyndham Championship, Scott opened up about this. The PGA Tour policy board member advised others not to hold their breath, as nothing had advanced since the meetings that took place earlier this year.

There’s really been no developments since earlier this year. So, I would say, don’t hold your breath.

Adam Scott told the reporters

In February, Scott, along with Jay Monahan and Tiger Woods, visited the White House in Washington and asked for assistance from U.S. President Donald Trump. The 79-year-old is a huge fan of golf and previously expressed that he could wrap up the merger deal within 15 minutes if he got the chance.

Scott would also speak on this trip and added that going back to the White House for assistance was not likely to change anything.

There’s not much happening between, I don’t know if more White House visits are really necessary. It was really quite an experience, I have to say. Those conversations haven’t advanced far from there.

Adam Scott added

If there are talks in the future regarding this, there will be a new face in the meetings. Earlier this year, the PGA Tour announced Brian Rolapp as the new CEO of the tour. Scott, however, believes that the former NFL executive has more important things to look forward to at the moment than the merger deal.

Adam Scott aiming to qualify for FedEx Cup playoffs with strong performance at Wyndham Championship

This week’s Wyndham Championship will conclude the regular season of the PGA Tour and determine the players for the upcoming FedEx Cup playoffs. 2013 Masters Winner Adam Scott is aiming to qualify for these playoffs with a strong performance at the Sedgefield Country Club.

The FedEx Cup playoffs are a three-series event that will feature the top 70-ranked players in the FedEx Cup Standings. This week, a total of 21 out of the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) will compete at the Wyndham Championship, including US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley.

While Bradley and some others are comfortably sitting in the top-70 rankings, there are some who are looking at the Wyndham Championship as the last chance to qualify for the playoffs.

Scott is one of them. The 14-time PGA Tour winner is ranked 85th in the standings. So he will need at least a tie for third finish to stand a chance to qualify for the FedEx St. Jude in Memphis next week.

I actually think sometimes when it’s like a last chance thing, this will be my last chance to play on the PGA Tour potentially for some weeks, it’s do or die and that’s a fun way to play. Sometimes we, or I have fell in the trap of like there’s always next week if it doesn’t work out and that’s not the case here, so I think that’s not a pressure but more motivation.

Adam Scott said as per PGA Tour

The big issue for Scott is, he has no top-10 finish this year. His previous top-10 finish came at the BMW Championship last year, where he was tied for 2nd.

He did seem to be in contention for the U.S. Open at Oakmont following a score of 67 in the third round. However, a 79 in the final round saw him slip out of the top-10 and finish T12.
