Golf betting: Outright bets for the Zozo Championship

The PGA Tour heads to Japan this week for the Zozo Championship at Narashino Country Club. This is the strongest field we've seen since the FedEx Cup Playoffs, as Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa and Hideki Matsuyama sit at the top of the odds board. We're bypassing all three stars and looking further down the board for our three outright bets for the Zozo Championship. Let's get into it,

Kurt Kitayama (+2500 BetMGM)

If you haven't been paying any attention to the PGA Tour swing season (most haven't with football on every weekend), you don't know that Kitayama is one of the hottest players in the field entering the Zozo Championship. The American finished T25 at the Black Desert Championship and T9 at the Shriners Children's Open this month, gaining a massive 15.72 true strokes on approach over those two starts.

That's important heading into this week because iron play is the biggest indicator of success at Narashino. Just look at the previous winners here: Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, Hideki Matsuyama and Tiger Woods. Iron savants — all of them. Narashino demands accuracy off the tee and precision on approach, and Kitayama has gained strokes in both categories in six of his last seven starts. If the putter shows up this week, Kitayama should find himself in contention.

Will Zalatoris (+3500 DraftKings)

We can't quit Zalatoris, and we never will. The 28-year-old was one of the best ball strikers on the PGA Tour in 2021 and 2022, but a back surgery in 2023 halted his meteoric ascent in its tracks. Zalatoris returned in 2024 and struggled through major season, but he finished the season on a high note with back-to-back top-15 finishes in the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Zalatoris gained strokes from off the tee, on approach and from putting in both FedEx Cup Playoff starts. He took nearly two months off after the postseason, so he's coming in fresh and fully healthy after dealing with more back issues throughout the season. Zalatoris is a great fit for this golf course, and we want to catch him now before another strong performance pushes his outright prices down.

Gary Woodland (+7500 FanDuel)

Woodland hasn't played well in 2024, which is completely understandable considering he underwent brain surgery to remove a tumor in the offseason. One year later, he's starting to look like his old self again.

Woodland finished T16 at the Sanderson Farms Championship and T9 at the Black Desert Championship in his last two starts. The American has gained at least 2.92 true strokes on approach in four of his last five starts, and he's gained strokes from off the tee in four straight. Woodland is bombing the ball right now, and he's even been above field average with his driving accuracy in three of his last four events.

The ball striking has been superb for Woodland, and he finished T5 at Narashino in his lone start here in 2020. He ranks No. 1 in the field in Data Golf's course history tool for Narashino. If Woodland is going to return to the winner's circle, this would be a great place to do it.
