Scottie Scheffler is a few holes away from winning The Open Championship for the first time in his career.
Scheffler, the top-ranked golfer in the world, is playing like the four-time major winner he is as he looks to win his fourth event of 2025. With five holes left, Scheffler, at 17-under for the tournament, leads the field by five strokes, sucking the potential drama out of an otherwise intriguing final round.
Behind Scheffler, Chris Gotterup is in second at 12-under. Three players sit at 11-under, with two others at 10-under. Essentially, if Scheffler was just a little more human, we could be looking at an epic finish.
Instead, the result seems like a foregone conclusion, much to the dismay of the many golf fans who no doubt respect Scheffler's abilities but just wish he'd give his competition a chance.
"5 players tied T2 at -10. The stage is set for an all-time Open finish… except Scheffler is playing his own tournament," said betting analyst Pam Maldonado.
"This would be an awesome tournament with a great finish coming….. if Scottie Scheffler wasn’t a complete psychopath," a fan added.
"If Scheffler wasn’t playing this would be the greatest finish ever," another fan said.
"If Scottie Scheffler wasn’t so good this would of been a unbelievable finish, birdies everywhere," a third fan chimed in.
"Imagine this finish today without Scheffler ruining it for everyone. Could have been an all timer," a fourth fan said.
As dominant as Scheffler has looked this weekend, the 29-year-old star made it clear before The Open that he doesn't view his career as "the be-all and end-all."
“To get to live out your dreams is very special, but at the end of the day, I’m not out here to inspire the next generation of golfers," Scheffler said. "I’m not out here to inspire someone to be the best player in the world because what’s the point? This is not a fulfilling life. It’s fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment, but it’s not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart."
You can catch the end of The Open on NBC.
