From club golfers to the elite pros, getting up and down is one of the game’s biggest tests. But Greg Norman once offered some pretty straightforward advice on how to handle those moments.
Norman, a two-time Open Champion, has plenty of experience when it comes to finding the bottom of the cup.
Across a decorated career that included over 85 wins worldwide, Norman also came close in majors another seven times in addition to his two victories.
Looking back at an old clip from his playing days, Norman’s advice on bunker play and putting sounds simple, but there’s real substance behind it.
Since LIV Golf came into the picture, Greg Norman has always backed himself. When he gives advice, there’s never any doubt in his voice.
Norman was one of the best around the greens, as his two Open Championships show. And when you listen to him break it down, he puts a lot of emphasis on the mental side.
“So you’re going to stay in behind the ball, keep your head steady and whip it through. Don’t be scared of the shot, if you’re scared of it, it will never work. Be positive and with a positive approach you’ll get it up and down without any problems,” Norman explained. When he moved on to putting, Norman made it clear there wasn’t a single way to get results.
“There are a couple of ways to grip the club, depending on how I feel each week. Sometimes I grip it more with my left hand underneath the putter. The back of the hand pointing to the ground. But sometimes if I’m feeling confident I’ll keep my hand nice and square to the hole, it just depends on how you feel.”
“Putting is all feel, all in your hands, so go out there and experiment. We see some strange grips out on the golf course but they all work.”
As noted, Norman’s tips in his video are more aimed at the everyday player. Still, even at the highest level, players pick up things from each other over time. When it comes to chipping around the green, Norman once spoke about how he learned a valuable lesson from Seve Ballesteros.
“Seve was probably the magician of the short game. He hit shots better than anybody else I’ve ever seen in my life. He hit shots that I had never even thought about seeing in my life,” Norman explained.
“But one of the things that Seve taught me the most, and it’s remained to this day, he said, make love to your hands when you put it on the golf club. More so in chipping than anything else.
“And what I mean by that is you have to caress the grip of the golf club. Do not choke it, do not white-knuckle it, just caress it. The more you have your hands soft on the grip, the easier it is for you to accelerate through the ball.
“Seve Ballesteros, who’s not with us anymore, gave me the greatest tip of all time that’s lasted for me to this day, which is make love to your hands when you put them on the golf club when you go to play a chip shot.”
If you take some time working on what Norman describes here and stick with it consistently during practice sessions heading into 2025 and beyond there could be steady progress in your chipping game down the line.
