Scottie Scheffler has taken over the PGA Tour this year. The world No. 1 just picked up his fifth win of the season at the BMW Championship, continuing a stretch that’s seen him finish inside the top 10 in nine of his last 10 starts.
This year, Scheffler loses that advantage with the move to cumulative scoring. In past formats, he would have started at 10 under par, two shots ahead of anyone else.

That two-shot lead played a big role last year when he edged out Collin Morikawa at East Lake. Morikawa actually had the lowest gross score in that event.
But even without starting strokes, it’s tough to see how anyone slows him down right now. He hasn’t finished outside the top 30 since then.
“It’s so different. I remember in my first few years on tour, I wouldn’t say guys took it as serious as they do now,” English said. “Just yesterday, the workout trailer opens at 7am and who’s the first person in the workout trailer? It’s Scottie Scheffler. That’s really cool for me to see.”
“This is the best player in the world, he’s been the best player in the world for a long time now, and he’s working his tail off. He’s the first player here getting ready to play at East Lake, trying to win the event. He just came off an unbelievable performance at Caves Valley and he never lets up.”
“He never relaxes. He’s relentless in the way he works and the way he prepares,” English added.
There is no question that is going to be near impossible to beat if someone does not bring their absolute best this week.
Scheffler’s results at the Tour Championship are exactly what you’d expect. Along with his win last year, he’s finished inside the top six in four of his five appearances.
All of those starts came during the starting strokes era, so this year will be a bit different for him. But there’s little reason to think it’ll affect how he plays.
His win last year also shows that any course changes at East Lake since 2023 shouldn’t be an issue for him.
Given his form, another victory in Atlanta wouldn’t raise many eyebrows either.
