Here's the real reason LIV Golf has been denied world ranking points

LIV Golf may be wrapping up its second season, but it's nowhere closer to being recognized in the golf world as a legitimate circuit than it was two years ago.

For starters, it still doesn't have a fully formed 2024 schedule or a better grasp on the proposed merger with the PGA Tour. And now, the Saudi Arabia-backed league has learned that its bid to qualify for world golf ranking points has been denied.

It's easy to blame the lost bid on LIV's divisiveness and overall "us against them" mentality. Or the fact that Greg Norman's rogue league isn't attracting as many viewers as it originally claimed it would. (Although, to be fair, it does seem like more golf fans are showing up to LIV events in person.) But none of the drama is to blame for LIV's bid for ranking points not panning out.

In fact, the reason given by the OWGR actually makes a lot of sense.

Simply put, the OWGR doesn't think LIV Golf's format fits the parameters needed for its players to qualify.

"This decision not to make them eligible is not political," OWGR chairman Peter Dawson told the Associated Press. "It is entirely technical. LIV players are self-evidently good enough to be ranked. They’re just not playing in a format where they can be ranked equitably with the other 24 tours and thousands of players trying to compete on them."

Sports Illustrated further explained what makes LIV's not compatible with the OWGR, while also pointing out this is something the league could change if it wanted to.

"The biggest reason LIV’s bid has so far failed: it is considered a closed shop. The avenues on and off the league are not believed sufficient by the OWGR," the article explained.

"This is a fair point and one that appears fixable if LIV is willing to make the changes and the OWGR signs off on them. In fact, Dawson said that LIV could resubmit its application. LIV Golf has previously said it has offered to alter its format but wants to know what will and won’t pass muster. Without that guidance, it seems, the League doesn’t want to make a change, only to be denied anyway."

Not surprisingly, however, LIV Golf doesn't appear very willing to change, saying in a statement to the AP: "OWGR’s sole objective is to rank the best players across the globe. Today’s communication makes clear that it can no longer deliver on that objective."

LIV Golf's future was already in question, and now there is even less of a clear path forward since its bid to qualify for world ranking points has been denied. Will LIV change its tune and modify its format so it can finally qualify? Like with so many things LIV Golf-related, we'll just have to wait and see how this one plays out.
