Hideki Matsuyama Seen Playing In A Downpour

This spring has been a very wet one for the PGA season.  The practice rounds for the Masters were rained out, and the CJ Cup Byron Nelson had rain constantly looming overhead, along with all the dropouts.  Pro golfers tend to be relatively unfazed by this.  Most events press on, rain or shine, and weather conditions just add another challenge to the game.  However, when the players are advised to step off the field due to weather conditions, they take that seriously for their safety.  Hideki Matsuyama saw the downpour ahead of the PGA Championship and did not care.

Matsuyama Golfing In The Rain

The current weather in North Carolina is abysmal.  Although it hasn’t gotten to the point of lightning in the area, conditions are bad enough that safety is a concern for fans.  Players are allowed to be on the field, but most decided to hold up inside.  If it’s enough to postpone a tournament, there’s not much point in staying on the field.  Yet there Matsuyama is, teeing off in the middle of a storm while other players would rather wait for the storm to die down at least a little.

Fans Are Confused

Under normal circumstances, fans would admire Matsuyama for his dedication to the sport.  For his determination to train, rain or shine.  However, looking at the footage posted on Twitter, it is hard to see the putting green beneath the layer of water that is covering it.  It would be hard to tell where the green was if it didn’t act as a plate at the bottom of a kitchen sink.  Fans have been seeing this and are confused as to why Matsuyama is persisting.

“I respect the grind, but this has gotta be the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen,” wrote one fan seeing the deluge on the green.

“Just go and putt in your hotel room.”  Said another, thinking it would be more effective to just use a practice mat in these conditions.

“Love the guy, but this is beyond pointless.”

Another fan wrote lampshading the fact that games don’t continue in these conditions.  A tournament is put on hold long before conditions get to this point.  The only thing a flooded green will prepare him for is playing in a swamp.  A condition that all these well-maintained courses could never provide.

Other fans in the comments were worried that Matsuyama might catch a cold from playing in the rain.  Considering that this is his practice for a major, it is the last thing he would want to happen.

Hideki Matsuyama Persists

Matsuyama’s dedication is something to admire.  Facing the storm, he decided that it wasn’t time to pack it in, but rather it was just an inconvenience at best.  An inconvenience that is turning the course into a giant water hazard.  Yet Matsuyama is just brushing it all off as he’s nonchalantly playing in the rain.  Hopefully, he doesn’t get sick from this and only has to let his clothes and equipment dry as a result.
