J.J. Spaun stunned the golf world with his US Open victory last month, claiming his first major title at Oakmont.

Spaun’s breakthrough season on the PGA Tour had already put him on the radar, though he did miss the cut at the Memorial Tournament just before heading to Oakmont.

That slip-up was quickly forgotten as he held off Robert MacIntyre by two shots to lift the trophy.

As part of his preparation for The Open Championship, Spaun is set to compete at this week’s Scottish Open.

He’s also taken time to reflect on his memorable week in Pennsylvania, especially that incredible 64-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole that sealed his victory.

MacIntyre, who was also in the mix on that Sunday, couldn’t believe what he’d seen from Spaun after the final round.

Hatton, meanwhile, caught the putt during a post-round interview. Speaking on GOLF’s Subpar podcast, Spaun appreciated both players’ responses.

He said of Hatton and MacIntyre: “Very [classy]. Tyrrell’s video is probably my favourite, not because of his reaction.

“But the cool thing about that video is that interview spot is probably 100 yards from the green and that roar is so f****** loud.

“You can really tell how loud it was from that video. That is like walk off, home run. It was pretty cool. They were good sports.

“I was cutting it up with Bobby Mac in the trailer before and we were calling it Pitts-borough because he’s from Edinburgh. Because it’s spelt burgh, but the way they pronounce it is weird and he loved it! He’s a good dude.”

Does J.J. Spaun have an edge over Robert MacIntyre and Tyrrell Hatton at The Open Championship?

Spaun’s win at Oakmont wasn’t just a milestone for him – it was only his second career victory, the first coming back at the 2022 Valero Texas Open.

While he took centre stage that week, MacIntyre now has a real opportunity to put his name in the spotlight.

The Scot is playing in the Scottish Open this week, a tournament where he finished runner-up last year before going one better and winning it in 2024. He also picked up another title earlier that year at the Canadian Open.

Hatton, meanwhile, is competing in LIV Golf Andalucia this week as he continues to look for his first win of 2025. But while those events matter, all eyes will soon shift to Royal Portrush for The Open.

Spaun enters The Open as the only one of the trio with a win this season. Both MacIntyre and Hatton will be looking to change that narrative next week in Northern Ireland.
