Jon Rahm describes what has felt ‘very weird’ since Europe’s Ryder Cup win in the US

The captain of the 2027 European Ryder Cup team at Adare Manor will need to maximise the potential of key players like Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, and Jon Rahm.

Luke Donald’s approach for Bethpage seemed to lean heavily on that trio, and they all delivered at least three points each after playing every session.

Fleetwood finished with more points than anyone else on either side, while Rahm provided some of the week’s highlights – including an incredible shot from deep rough on day one and a ridiculous chip-in on Saturday.

It was a risky move by Donald to play all three men in every session. But in the end, Europe had just enough left to get over the finish line.

It was a milestone week for Europe, who became just the fourth team in 30 years to win the Ryder Cup away from home. That win also firmly cemented Rahm and Fleetwood as two of the event’s standout players.

Even so, speaking ahead of this week’s Spanish Open, the Spaniard admitted it felt strange to be singled out for praise over what was very much a team effort.

“It is very weird being congratulated for something that I didn’t just do myself, right. Like when I get thank yous and congratulations, I wish we were all together because we all deserve it, right. It wasn’t just me. I only contributed three points out of 15, right, and all of those three with a partner.

“So it’s an odd feeling, but it’s very nice to be able to give that to European golf.”

Why the Spanish Open suits Jon Rahm’s return

After seeing how hard it’s become to win a Ryder Cup on the road, it’s been impressive just how quickly so many of Donald’s players have hit form again.

Tyrrell Hatton, who partnered with Rahm in several matches, finished second, while Robert MacIntyre claimed victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Rasmus Hojgaard also had a solid showing in the US, finishing third at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Meanwhile, motivation will not be an issue for Rahm this week, as he has made it clear how much a good result in Madrid would mean to him.

“It’s possibly two of the most emotional weeks for me, right. Being part of a Ryder Cup is something so unique, so special, especially winning away. It’s incredible. It’s an incredible feeling. But then coming to Spain, an event that matters so much to me, hoping to win for the fourth time.

“Hard to put it into words, right. May not be the biggest event in the world but to me it’s one of the biggest.”

Rahm also spoke about how much he appreciates being back home after facing such hostile crowds during Europe’s win at Bethpage.

“I would say after watching Bob MacIntyre win in Scotland it’s a huge positive, yeah. From going to having the crowd against us to having everybody cheer for me is going to be very special. Massive difference, massive juxtaposition but beautiful in a different way, right.

“I’m looking forward to it. Looking forward to hopefully getting that fourth Spanish Open. And again, hoping to actually just perform well in front of this crowd. They have been so good to me, they have been so supportive, the least I can do is give them my best shot and hopefully I’m there on Sunday to win it,” he stated.
