Lexi Thompson confirmed her plans after the KPMG PGA Championship and explained why fans won’t see her on the course for a while.

This season, Thompson has played a lighter schedule following her decision to step back from full-time LPGA Tour competition in 2024.

Even so, she found herself near the top of the leaderboard at the KPMG PGA before a final-round 76 dropped her out of contention. As has often been the case during her career, questions about slow play surfaced yet again.

Thompson didn’t make any headlines for slow play on Sunday. Instead, she spoke calmly about her round – and made it clear she’s planning a break from the game after one more event.

Lexi Thompson was again put on the clock during her final round of the Women’s PGA, with Golfweek’s Beth Ann Nichols reporting she took more than two minutes over one shot during the round.

Despite any negativity, Thompson is known for dealing with criticism head-on and has always been willing to speak openly to the media.

Speaking about her performance on Sunday, she emphasised the benefits she took from the tournament and praised the fans who showed up despite the extreme heat.

“Yeah, a lot of positives to take from the week. This week was very difficult between the winds and just how the golf course was playing. It was overall a very challenging week. Positives with I guess the top 15 finish, and take that into next week pairing up with Megan Khang.”

As for what’s next, Thompson said she’ll play the Dow Championship before taking an extended break.

“I’m taking time off. I felt like I just played three weeks in one, so I’m ready for a good five-, six-week break now.”

That time off likely means fans – and critics – won’t see Thompson until much later in the summer, giving her a chance to reset before returning to an already busy season.
