Ludvig Aberg earned himself a top-5 finish at the PGA Championship on Sunday, losing out by four strokes to the eventual champion, Aaron Rai.
Aberg will surely get over the line soon in a major championship, but last week at Aronimink was not his time.
Rai played almost flawless golf on Sunday during the final round of the PGA Championship, and he was a more than deserving winner.
Ludvig Aberg got to watch Aaron Rai‘s brilliance close up at Aronimink during the final round of the PGA Championship, after they were paired together for the final round.
The likes of Jon Rahm and Xander Schauffele raved about Aaron Rai at Aronimink, after the Englishman’s stunning final-round 65.
Aberg played well himself and posted a score of 69 on Sunday, but that clearly wasn’t enough after Rai played his final 10 holes in an incredible six-under par.
Aberg was obviously disappointed that he failed to win the PGA Championship in Pennsylvania on Sunday.
However, the man from Sweden is always incredibly classy in defeat, and he proved that once again after the final round at Aronimink.
Aberg responded when asked what it was like to watch Rai play on Sunday.
“He obviously drove it really well, hit his iron shots really well and putted nicely. Which is a good recipe to shoot a low score,“ Aberg said.
“But even, you know, some of the shots that he hit, the bunker shot on 13, stands out, he’s flying it all the way.
“Where we already have a lead, it’s easy to leave that, you know, 12 or 15 feet short, but he goes all the way, and then a couple of really good shots on 16 and obviously on 17, the putt is crazy.
“But yeah, Aaron is a super, super-nice guy and I couldn’t be happier for him.”
Rai was asked by reporters how he managed to maintain his composure late on at Aronimink on Sunday.
“I think firstly the golf course really demands it,“ the Englishman responded.
“It was a true major championship setup in terms of how difficult it was, how penalizing it was, but it also rewarded you for good play.
“So I think the nature of the course and the nature of the shots that are required over the last few holes just require a lot of attention and a lot of focus.
“Yeah, that putt on 17 was incredible. I was just trying to focus on speed and get it close. It started to look really good line-wise with probably about 15 feet to go.
“Slowed up really nicely as well. So it just kind of conspired all together for that ball to go in the hole. But an incredible putt and a real bonus to see that one go in.“
