Marco Penge has taken the lead at the Genesis Invitational after two rounds, following a flawless second-round 64 at Riviera.

Penge had an outstanding season on the DP World Tour last year, picking up three wins and securing his PGA Tour card for 2026 as a result.

The Englishman hasn’t hit the ground running this year, missing two cuts and finishing T-64 in his early outings.

But things have turned around this week at Riviera. After shooting 66 in the first round, he backed it up with a bogey-free 64 to move into the lead with two rounds remaining.

Playing alongside Wyndham Clark over the opening two days, Penge wasn’t alone in making an impression. Clark posted scores of 67 and 68 to sit comfortably inside the top-10 heading into the weekend.

Clark has been a divisive figure on tour recently, most notably following his US Open outburst that led to property damage in the locker room area.

Penge shared a different perspective after their time together, speaking highly of Clark despite recent headlines. Speaking to reporters after his second round:

Following Clark and Penge around Riviera would have made for great viewing over the opening two rounds.

Both are known for their distance off the tee, and it’s not surprising they’ve each found form this week in Pacific Palisades.

Penge spoke to Sky Sports during their Genesis coverage, discussing how he’s adjusting to life on the PGA Tour compared to his time on the DP World Tour.

“Yeah, this is only my fourth week but it’s obviously different to Europe,“ Penge admitted.

“You need different attributes to play well in Europe, and different here, so I’m still figuring that out a bit. ”

Penge went on to talk about learning from other players, including his recent playing partner:

“I still have so much to improve on and get better at. Parts of my game still really frustrate me. I’m just learning from all of the top players out here and, you know, playing with Wyndham the last two days, and some great players over the past three to four weeks. ”

He finished by saying: “It’s just nice to watch them and try to learn stuff from them.”

Even with his strong play this week, Penge feels there’s still room to improve.

“I mean, my iron play for me, it’s just so inconsistent,” Penge explained.

“The performance I put on there for the last seven holes was just so good, and then some of the shots I hit on the front nine, the two just don’t go together if you know what I mean.”

Penge thinks some of those inconsistencies could be linked to his style of play.

“I suppose being a high ball speed player and being the high flair player that I am, that may just always be like that,” he said.

“But I definitely would like to tighten some screws and bring it all together a bit more.”

Penge is aware that his development will be a gradual process. “I think that’s just part of my process to try and become better,” he added.

If he can find more consistency with his irons, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him in contention at even bigger events in future seasons.
