Making good decisions in golf is at a premium in this day and age.
So, when the R&A announced that they were appointing Catriona Matthew OBE for another stint as GB&I Curtis Cup Captain, it was welcome news and clearly the right decision.
After winning a 10 ½ to 9 ½ barn-burner at Sunningdale in September, Matthew was credited with being a mastermind, leading a winning GB&I team to their first victory in eight years.
“This is just as special as any of the others,” Matthew said of her Curtis Cup win to go along with her two Solheim Cup victories. “Anytime you captain a team when you're representing your country, there is no bigger honor. I had a fantastic team, the eight of them. They all played well. They all contributed.”
At 55, Matthew has done almost everything in golf, including winning a major and appearing in the Solheim Cup as a player and captain. The Curtis Cup captaincy is the icing on the cake.
“I’m delighted to be reappointed as Great Britain and Ireland Captain for the Curtis Cup and look forward to leading the team at Bel-Air in 2026,” said Matthew, who was a member of three GB&I Curtis Cup teams.
In her three Curtis Cup appearances from 1990 to 1994, Matthew went 7-4-1, 1-3 in 1990, 3-1 in 1992, and 3-0-1 in 1994.
“It’s always harder to win away from home, and I’m excited for the opportunity,” added the 1993 Women’s Amateur Champion. “It will be a great occasion at Bel-Air and it is my job to again build a high performing and motivated team who will aim to retain the trophy.”
The R&A also announced that Dean Robertson, a European Tour winner and the High Performance Golf Coach at the University of Stirling, will captain the GB&I team in the Walker Cup at the Cypress Point Club from 6-7 September.
