Max Homa makes another desperate move to revive his career

Max Homa can feel his PGA Tour career slipping away, and he's willing to take drastic measures to save it. Ahead of the Charles Schwab Challenge and Colonial Country Club, the 35-year-old golfer parted ways with his caddie for the third time in the last 13 months.

According to Adam Schupak of Golfweek, Homa split with veteran caddie Lance Bennett after his missed cut at the PGA Championship. Homa and Bennett were coming up on one year together, but now they're both searching for new partners. Peter Pappageorge, Homa's friend, is listed as his caddie for this week's Charles Schwab Challenge

Bennett first joined Homa at last year's RBC Canadian Open. In 28 PGA Tour starts together, the duo recorded just six top-20 finishes and three top-10s.

The split is yet another chapter in Homa's caddie carousel over the last 13 months. Last April, he split with longtime caddie and friend Joe Greiner after 10 prosperous years. Greiner was on the bag for all six of Homa's wins on the PGA Tour, and he's found another successful venture alongside Akshay Bhatia.

Homa hired Bill Harke after ending his working relationship with Greiner, but that partnership lasted only two months. After splitting with Bennett, Homa will move to his fourth caddie since the start of the 2025 season.

Max Homa is desperate to revive his career

Homa's game has been off no matter who's been on his bag over the last year-and-a-half. The American seemed to be building some momentum for this season after a strong performance in the fall of 2025, but he hasn't carried that over to 2026.

In 13 starts this year, Homa has more missed cuts (four) than top-30 finishes (three). He ranks 125th on the PGA Tour this season in total strokes gained, 135th in strokes gained on approach, 132nd in scoring average and 134th in bogey avoidance.

The worrisome part of Homa's season is that he ranks 74th in the FedEx Cup standings and has fallen to 123rd in the Official World Golf Ranking. If he keeps performing like he has to start the season, he could be in jeopardy of losing his PGA Tour card for 2027.

It's understandable that Homa wanted to make a change, but his issues aren't caddie-related. When Homa split with Greiner, the longtime bag man immediately helped Justin Thomas to a win and is now thriving on Bhatia's bag. It wouldn't be surprising if Bennett experiences a similar career arc. After all, he caddied for Tiger Woods, Sungjae Im and Matt Kuchar in the past, so he's clearly a coveted talent on the pro circuit.

No matter who Homa chooses as his next full-time caddie, he needs to start playing better if he wants to keep his job.
