Rory McIlroy has made history. After winning his first Masters on Sunday, McIlroy is now just the sixth player in golf history to complete the career-grand-slam.
McIlroy joins the ranks of Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods as the only other players to win all four of golf's major tournaments.
McIlroy's quest began in August of 2014 when he won his third different major (PGA Championship). His quest ended on Sunday when he sank a 3-foot putt on the first sudden-death playoff-hole against Justin Rose.
The moment McIlroy rolled in the putt, and dropped to his knees in celebration, Nike dropped a brand new ad honoring McIlroy's historic victory.
Four majors made @McIlroyRory great. Completing a career Grand Slam, legendary. pic.twitter.com/inD1hyPkWr
— Nike (@Nike) April 13, 2025
The 30-second ad serves as an ode to McIlroy's grand-slam-accomplishment.
"His walk just looks different with a grand slam. A teenage prodigy took place amongst the immortals. It's a walk he's made many times before, but this time, it just feels like destiny," the narrator of the ad reads.
The ad is set in a dry cleaning business, with clothes continuously rotating toward the front of the store. As the ad comes to a conclusion, McIlroy's green jacket is placed on the rack with a note attached that reads, "Sunday Pick up" followed by Nike's closing-line for the ad, "This was always waiting for you".
With Nike's relationship with Tiger Woods coming to an end in 2024, McIlroy joins Scottie Scheffler as the most notable professional golfer sponsored by Nike.
As the ad mentions, McIlroy broke onto the PGA Tour as a young phenom, turning pro in 2007 at just 18-years-old. He would win his first major in 2011 (U.S. Open) and his Masters win is No. 5 of his storied career.
The road to success, however, has been filled with speed bumps along the way. McIlroy has come close to completing the career-grand-slam, finishing runner-up at multiple majors.
McIlroy's elation could be felt the instant he sank his Masters-winning putt. Tears, paired with countless deep breaths of relief, accompanied McIlroy off the green at 18, as he made his way to his family and ultimately to Butler Cabin.
This is where McIlroy finally received his green jacket, and as Nike reminded the world, it was "always waiting".
