PGA could ban fans who use 'Brooksie' chant at Ryder Cup

It appears Team USA captain Steve Stricker isn't the only one who wants the Brooks Koepka-Bryson DeChambeau beef to take a back seat at this year's Ryder Cup.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said as part of a press conference Tuesday that fans can be ejected from the event for evoking the "Brooksie" chant — a moniker aimed at DeChambeau by Koepka supporters.

"Fans who breach our code of conduct are subject to expulsion from the tournament and loss of their credential or ticket,'' Monahan said from East Lake Golf Club, where the season-ending Tour Championship begins Thursday.

The new change to the fan conduct policy comes just days after DeChambeau got into an altercation with a fan who shouted, "Great job, Brooksie!" at him during the BMW Championship. DeChambeau, who lost the event to Patrick Cantlay in a playoff, cursed at the patron before motioning to police to intervene.

"The barometer that we are all using is the word 'respect,' and to me, when you hear 'Brooksie' yelled or you hear any expression yelled, the question is, is that respectful or disrespectful,'' Monahan continued. "That has been going on for an extended period of time. To me, at this point, it's disrespectful, and that's the kind of behavior and we're not going to tolerate going forward.''

Being that golf fans are at their most vocal at the Ryder Cup, it is anyone's guess how this proposed change to the fan behavior policy will role out. Monahan, for his part, is at least trying to make things civil.

"Now, I would ask our fans, again, the very best fans in the world, to take a moment and think about what it means to be a golf fan and to enjoy a PGA Tour tournament," he said. "We're going to show everyone how easy it is to enjoy yourself at an event while also respecting the athletes in the field of play and the fans around you, many of whom are families with young kids who have a chance to be lifetime fans of the game themselves."
