Cam Young’s first PGA Tour win at the Wyndham Championship was a huge moment, but it wasn’t all smiles elsewhere in the field.
With FedEx Cup points up for grabs, a handful of players were fighting to stay above 70th in the rankings. Australian Cam Davis was one of them.
After a triple bogey on the 11th, Davis barely avoided elimination, finishing 69th thanks to Davis Thompson’s missed putt. Despite securing his spot, he seemed displeased while awaiting official results.
It must be tough to play a final round with your FedEx Cup future up in the air, especially without knowing if you’ve done enough to stay above the cut.
Davis was right on the edge and for a while, it looked like he might fall just short of that crucial 70th spot.
In the end, other results went his way. But speaking after his round, Davis admitted he’d already mentally checked out before his spot was confirmed.
“Honestly, I was trying my best to put a really good round together and not make any big mistakes, and after I made that big mistake on 11, I kind of just, I don’t know, the mindset changed from trying to have a really good score without making any mistakes to not really caring that much if I put a poor swing on it or not anymore,” Davis said.
“I just kind of, I don’t know, I just, I just freed up and just started playing golf because I kind of thought that my chances of getting through to next week were kind of out of my hands at that point.
“Yeah, hit some good shots. I don’t know. Yeah, I didn’t feel super special, I didn’t really know what I was playing for at the end there other than a bit of pride and for as good a finish as I can finish in this tournament, too. It was nice to make the putt on 18 there.”
While Cam Davis managed to squeeze in, several others weren’t as fortunate, and the top 70 is missing a few notable names.
Davis Thompson missed out, along with Gary Woodland and the usually steady Byeong Hun An.
The Hojgaard twins also fell short, as did Max Homa, Keith Mitchell, and Alex Noren. Former Ryder Cup player Sam Burns wasn’t close either, nor was the popular Sahith Theegala.
So while Davis may have felt low after his round, things could have been far worse for him.
