After months of silence, golf fans received an update on Phil Mickelson’s absence.
Mickelson, 56, missed every major tournament this season. He announced in April that he was pulling out of the Masters due to a family-related issue. It didn’t take long for him to eventually withdraw from the PGA Championship and Open Championship as well.
“Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter,” Mickelson said in a statement shared on social media. “I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club and it is definitely the most special week of the year. I wish everyone the best of luck and will be watching.”
Well, according to TMZ Sports, Mickelson recently checked himself into an addiction treatment center. The six-time major winner is already out of the facility.
“Phil was seeking treatment for family trauma and addiction,” a rep for Mickelson told TMZ Sports.
TMZ noted that Mickelson has struggled with a gambling addiction in the past. There were also rumblings about him losing his membership at The Farms Country Club near San Diego.
Back in June, a representative for Mickelson said he was focused on becoming “the husband, father, and man his family deserves.” They didn’t mention anything about his future as a golfer.
Mickelson hasn’t competed in a tournament since LIV Golf’s South Africa event in March. That appearance snapped a seven-month absence for him at the time.
While fans of Mickelson’s game would love to see him back on the course in 2027, there’s zero indication that he’ll be ready to compete.
